Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Sinners of the Bible Others have given up in despair and closed the church at night. Still others go on their way with fairly well filled pews in the morning, and only here and there a scattered listener at night. For many years I have been pastor of down-town churches in large cities, and during all those years have never failed to have full houses on Sunday night. The publishers of this volume have asked me to furnish them with a series of Sunday night sermons running through the autumn and Winter, and this book is the result. The ser mons included in it were preached during the autumn and winter of 1898 and 1899, in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Ohio. They were delivered to audiences that constantly taxed the seating capacity of a very large church. The publishers have also asked me to add a word concerning my theory about the Sunday night service and my method of conducting it. My theory is very simple. It is this: men and women will not go to church very long, or very frequently, unless they are personally preached to. I preach on Sunday morning to Christian people largely. Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Promises of the Bible This volume is the fourth member of a quar tet, following in line The Great Sinners of the Bible, The Great Saints of the Bible, and The Great Portraits of the Bible. The previous volumes have been so generously treated by the public that I am encouraged to send this forth to the friends already made by them, with the hope that it may be found worthy of fellowship with the others and with an added note of advancement. It deals with great themes. The Great Promises of the Bible are the sure anchors that will hold in any storm. These sermons were preached in Grace Methodist Epis copal Church, New York City. They were blessed of God, on their delivery, to the comfort and salva tion of many people, and they are sent forth with a prayer that the presence of the Holy Spirit may be felt in the printed page. Book Description
Excerpt from The Children of the Bible These children, though their names form a large por tion of our Bible, were all sinners, save one. Their chitu aries may be written thus: They lived, suffered, sinned, and died. One became so pure, and held such sweet in'ter course with God, that one day he went on the top of a mountain to converse with him - rand the grand old con versation may be still go1ng on for aught I know. The little boys saved by Elijah and Elisha have left no de scription of the scenery on the other Shore. The daughter of J airus left us no hint as to the wanderings of her pure Spirit between her death and the blessed Talitha cumi of Jesus. One of these children lived to man's estate, then laid down his life, a ransom for many. His oleath possessed so much virtue that it brings life to all who will accept it. There was no power that could have taken this precious life, but he laid it down - poured out his blood on a cross for us.
