Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The application of this principle to the present case seems to follow naturally from what has already been said. St. John's work is a gospel: accordingly, like the other gospels, it will be made up of the the Acts and Sayings of Jesus. But its prologue has set forth a very special pur pose for the narrative the support of a theological position. In accordance with this we find, as a fact, that the 'acts of Jesus become in St. John's narrative 'signs, ' and the 'sayings' are all of the nature of 'witness.' From this point of view the work falls into natural divisions: seven incidents constitute the Earlier Signs and Witness of Jesus, seven more his Signs and Witness to the Jews; four divisions comprise the Signs and Witness among his own Disciples, and the three phases of the final Passion and Resurrection history may again be treated as Signs and Witness. Book Description
'The Book of St John is too witty to be a manifesto, but it is a sturdy invocation of the need for comfort, generosity and ritual at the table. And it is a gurglingly delightful compendium of - quite simply - delicious ideas and stories' Nigella Lawson 'An unutterable joy from the team behind one of the most influential and important restaurants in Britain ... This is much more than a book of recipes, though (glorious as they are). It’s also about the importance of the table, of feasting, of friendship, of the white cloth napkin on your knee. And it sings of simple but wonderful pleasures: a bacon sandwich and a glass of cider, a doughnut and a glass of champagne.’ Diana Henry, The Telegraph 'The Book of St. JOHN, part food gospel, part memoir, part recipe book.' Observer Food Monthly Join the inimitable Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver as they welcome you into their world-famous restaurant, inviting you to celebrate 25 years of unforgettable, innovative food. Established in 1994, St. JOHN has become renowned for its simplicity, its respect for quality ingredients and for being a pioneer in zero waste cooking – they strive to use every part of an ingredient, from leftover stale bread for puddings, bones for broths and stocks, to typically unused parts of the animal (such as the tongue) being made the hero of a dish. Recipes include: Braised rabbit, mustard and bacon Ox tongue, carrots and caper sauce Duck fat toast Smoked cod’s roe, egg and potato cake Confit suckling pig shoulder and dandelion The Smithfield pickled cucumbers St. JOHN chutney Butterbean, rosemary and garlic wuzz Honey and bay rice pudding Featuring all the best-loved seminal recipes as well as comprehensive menus and wine recommendations, Fergus and Trevor will take a look back at the ethos and working practices of a food dynasty that has inspired a generation of chefs and home cooks.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: With Introduction and Notes Like the rest of the disciples, John went back to his home and work. He was on the lake with his father and brother and their partners, Simon and Andrew, that eventful morning when Jesus appeared, preached to the people from the deck of Simon's boat, gave him the remarkable haul of fishes in his net, and then called him and the other three to follow Him. How long after the incident by the Jordan this second call took place we cannot say; but it decided conclusively for John, as for the others, his future as a fisher of men, Matt. Iv. 18 ff. Mark i. 16 fit; Luke v. I - I I. The ascendancy which Christ had already gained over these receptive youths is to be ex plained, however, not by the events of this morning, but by the events of those of that earlier time by the river Jordan. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: The Authorised Version With Introduction and Notes In examining the indirect evidence which the fourth Gospel furnishes as to its authorship, it will be most convenient, as well as most satisfactory, to consider the available materials in relation to successive questions which become more and more definite as we proceed. How far then can we infer from the book itself, with more or less certainty, that the author was, or was not, a Jew, a Jew of Palestine, an eye-witness, an Apostle, and, last of all, St John, the son Of Zebedee? Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel of St. John and the Synoptic Gospels Whoever undertakes nowadays to advo cate the genuineness and credibility of the Gospel of John, must be prepared beforehand for some prominent representatives of theo logical science and several among their pupils and adherents to say with indignation or pitiful smile: Lost effort! It is the surest of the sure, that the fourth Gospel as an historical source for the life of Jesus is no more to be taken into account. Who still considers it as such is under the Spell of church-tradition; custom goes ahead of truth; he has no idea particularly of the religio-historical method; science will take precedence over him in the order of the day, as over everything reactionary.
