The Oklahoma Kid
Author: Kenneth Orr
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1456758748
Category : Oklahoma
Languages : en
Pages : 394
Book Description
If you like to read about early western history and at the same time read about the real people who were making it happen, this is the right book for you. This fictional story is a combination of many stories that were told to me by residents of east central Oklahoma during the years I lived there. It covers law enforcement, selling whiskey, Indians, love and family, circus tent preachers, medicine men and the oil company's takeover of much of Oklahoma's natural assets. It is also about how society was reacting to the trials and problems of the common man. You will need to put yourself back int history and forget modern day events to enjoy reading this book. As you read you will soon find that you are identifying the same kinds of events that happened then with similar events that happen everyday in our current world. It is a fact, history does repeat itself. The only differences are the people and the more modern way things are being done today. My first two books were centered on Texas. This one was just waiting inside my head to jump out. I wanted to tell a tale of the early days in the wonderful state of Oklahoma. The "West" as we refer to our country today, was based on several states and the extreems found in all of the areas. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The Smart Parent's Guide
Author: Jennifer Trachtenberg
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439171890
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do! “ Moms and dads need expert guidelines, especially when it comes to their kids’ health. This book reveals the inside strategies I use myself—I’m a parent, too!— to avoid critical, common blunders where it matters most: in the ER, pediatrics ward, all-night pharmacy, exam room, or any other medical hot spot for kids. These tips could save your child’s life one day. Even tomorrow.” –Dr. Jen Making health care decisions for your child can be overwhelming in this age of instant information. It’s easy to feel like you know next to nothing or way too much. Either way, you may resort to guessing instead of making smart choices. That’s why the nation’s leading health care oversight group, The Joint Commission, joined forces with Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg on this book: to help you make the right decisions, whether you’re dealing with a checkup or a full-blown crisis. The Smart Parent’s Guide will give you the information you need to manage the pediatric health care system. Dr. Jen understands the questions parents face—as a mom, she’s faced them herself. She walks you through everything: from how to choose the best ER for kids (not adults) to when to give a kid medicine (or not to) to how pediatricians care for their own children (prepare to be surprised). Her goal is your goal: to protect the health of your children. There simply is nothing more important.

The Body in the Library
Author: Iain Bamforth
Publisher: Verso
ISBN: 9781859845349
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 462
Book Description
The Body in the Library provides a nuanced and realistic picture of how medicine and society have abetted and thwarted each other ever since the lawyers behind the French Revolution banished the clergy and replaced them with doctors, priests of the body. Ranging from Charles Dickens to Oliver Sacks, Anton Chekhov to Raymond Queneau, Fanny Burney to Virginia Woolf, Miguel Torga to Guido Ceronetti, The Body in the Library is an anthology of poems, stories, journal entries, Socratic dialogue, table-talk, clinical vignettes, aphorisms, and excerpts written by doctor-writers themselves. Engaging and provocative, philosophical and instructive, intermittently funny and sometimes appalling, this anthology sets out to stimulate and entertain. With an acerbic introduction and witty contextual preface to each account, it will educate both patients and doctors curious to know more about the historical dimensions of medical practice. Armed with a first-hand experience of liberal medicine and knowledge of several languages, Iain Bamforth has scoured the literatures of Europe to provide a well-rounded and cross-cultural sense of what it means to be a doctor entering the twenty-first century.
