Internet gambling has become not only a transnational phenomenon, but also a convenient alternative for entertainment. However, online gambling is also in the midst of a great controversy. Concerns about the addictive nature of the Internet, illegal activity proliferation, potential impacts on problem and pathological gambling, youth gambling, and unsupervised game operators taking advantage of citizens have resulted in government reaction to prohibit this profitable industry. While some supporters have argued that existing Internet gambling legislation is the solution, others have criticized that the current regulatory framework is ineffective and has done nothing to reduce Internet gambling. The purpose of this paper is to analyze whether Internet gambling should be legalized and regulated or prohibited in the United States. It illustrates the advantages and repercussions resulting from both approaches, and examines the controversy of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and existing law enforcement problems. This study will also serve as the basis for determining what to expect of both approaches and draw valid conclusions to present possible scenarios for the Internet gambling industry under both stances. Reviewing previous literature and telephone interviewing methodologies were used as a foundation for analysis on what to expect of both scenarios and which approach would result in the greatest good for society. The research findings suggest that an effective regulatory framework considering social problems, underage gambling, jurisdictional challenges, responsible gambling, and privacy implications without suppressing or sacrificing technological expansion is a necessary aspect to overcome current challenges and enforcement difficulties in the Internet gambling industry.
