Book Description
There has been a recent upsurge of red-legged partridge research in most countries where the species is distributed, but no comprehensive review of that fresh and relevant multidisciplinary and international knowledge is available. In fact, this is probably the first scientific book on this important species, apart from Dick Potts’ excellent works on British-introduced population, or ONCFS’s (Office Nationale de la Chasse et le Faune Sauvage, France) older technical reports. This is in strong contrast with a plethora of literature in hunting magazines or non-academic books, not often precise, realistic, or well informed. Thus, the book fills a great bibliography gap that could have important social impact. The common thread of the book is the prominent role a species like this may play for research, from basic physiological or ecological knowledge to socio-economics of hunting and the rural world. The general framework of the book [I1] is the important role that hunting and game management may play in both rural economies and biodiversity conservation, with the partridge as flag species, and also in identifying the “dark drift” that industrial, incorrectly deployed management, or hunting vision may have on both sustainability of resources and nature conservation at large. The final aim of the book is identifying the best future scenario, both for partridge hunters and managers as well as the general public.

The Return of the Grey Partridge
Author: Roger Morgan-Grenville
Publisher: Serpent's Tail
ISBN: 1805223240
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
The Return of the Grey Partridge tells the extraordinary story of how wildlife is restored to the Arundel Estate in West Sussex. Prompted by the collapse in numbers of one species, the grey partridge of the title, the managers of the estate woke up to the devastating effect modern farming methods were having on wildlife. Following the estate through the seasons of one year, the book shows how the farm of Peppering is gradually renatured: fields are divided up with hedgerows and trees, beetle banks are built across fields, the land is manured rather than fed with artificial fertilisers, and much of it is returned to pasture. Detailed descriptions of nature give a sense of this large estate coming back to life - still very much farmland, but with a rapid increase in wildlife and biodiversity. And the partridges return. Written in collaboration with the Duke of Norfolk, owner of the Arundel Estate, this moving and hopeful account shows how modern farming can work in partnership with nature to restore not only birdlife but to benefit the whole ecosystem.

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 694
Book Description
What could be simpler than buying a house in the country? When Sol, a city financier, purchases Bothan Faobhar on a whim, he discovers a world where the neighbours are both distant and at odds with his urban ideals. With no mobile signal, no electricity, water that runs brown, it is an existence that he quickly realises he is ill-prepared for. Can someone like Sol survive here? And then there is the mysterious previous occupant, G, who seems not to have left. Who is G? Why does he stay in contact with Sol? And, why does everyone think that the house chose Sol and not the other way around? This is the story of Sol's introspective journey from self-obsessed investor to outwards-looking naturalist with a deepening knowledge and interest in the wild world just beyond his own doorstep, starting with the visitation of a Scottish wildcat. It is about the wildlife of Britain, rural communities and folk music, and the need to protect them all from certain extinction. It is also about a man who buys a house.

Conservation and the Use of Wildlife Resources
Author: Melvin Bolton
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400914458
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
Not everybody cares about the fate of wild animals or the state of the natural environment. I met a lady who said it wouldn't worry her if all the wild animals in the world disappeared overnight. She was a city person~ she said. There are also people who would prefer to let animals become extinct than to have them kept in captivity - no matter how progressive the zoo. There are those who, on principle, will not eat meat, let alone do the killing, and there are those who enjoy nothing so much as shooting birds. People in the last two camps may oppose each other in claiming to be con servationists. Extremists are unlikely to find their opinions being reversed by this book but, because of the scope of the subject, I believe there is a good chance that anybody with an interest in wildlife will find in it something new to think about. It may not be too much to hope that a few disagreements might also be settled because I suspect there is more common ground than is generally realized among those with opposing views.
