Book Description
Excerpt from The Freemason's Monthly Magazine, 1853, Vol. 12 Nor is the necessity for inquiry restricted to the younger Brethren. I am decidedly of opinion, says our learned Brother Dr. Oliver, that much general knowledge is necessary to expand the mind, and familiar ize it with Masonic discussions and illustrations, before a Brother can be pronounced competent to undertake the arduous duty of governing a Lodge. A Master of the work ought to have nothing to learn. He should be fully qualified, not only to instruct the younger Brethren, but to resolve the doubts of those who are more advanced in Masonic knowledge; to reconcile apparent contradictions; to settle chronologies and to eluci date obscure facts or mystic legends, as well as to answer the objections and to render pointless the ridicule of our uninitiated adversaries. Book Description
Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Magazine, 1854, Vol. 2 We have, indeed, no discouraging remarks to ofl'er on the state of the Craft in general, but, as its kindly recognised interpreter as the almost sole medium of its intercommunica tion either with its own members or with those who 'have not yet tasted the cup of its mysteries - we venture, in all brotherly feeling, to say our say, and perhaps to grumble a little, at a few matters at which we feel every real working and upright Mason is as indignant as ourselves. Book Description
Excerpt from Freemasons' Monthly Magazine, 1842, Vol. 1 The character and design of the Masonic Institution have seldom been more distinctly and accurately set forth, than in the above concise para graph from the pen of him who was, and will continue through all coming time to be, the first in the hearts of his countrymen. Few men have understood the nature and tendencies of Freemasonry better; and fewer still have loved it with a more enduring constancy. Washington associa ted himself with it, while yet a youth and withdrew only when summon ed to take his seat in the Grand Lodge whose convocation 'is eternal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Freemasons' Monthly Magazine, 1857, Vol. 16 The above is from the report of the committee of correspondence in the Grand Lodge of California, presented at the late annual communica tion of that Grand Body and is predicated on the address of the Grand Master 01' the Grand Lodge of this Commonwealth, December, 1855. The remark that btttfour reports were, in that year, received from the Dis triet Deputy Grand Masters, is certainly warranted by the terms of the address, and yet it docs not present the fact as it actually stood. 11 might have failed to do ao, had the precise words of the address been given, namely, l have received written reports from only four of the ten Dis triet Deputy Grand Masters. The reports referred to by the Grand Master were special and detailed reports, which he had, the year previous, requested the Deputies to make for his personal use, that he might thereby be enabled to lay before the Grand Lodge in his annual communication, more precise and particular information than he could otherwise do. Four only of the Deputies had complied with this request, in season for his purpose. It was this emission to which he referred, and intended to reprove. The usual reports and returns had, however, been made by all the Deputies before the address was delivered. But these did not give the details he wanted and had asked for. Book Description
Excerpt from The Freemasons' Monthly Magazine, 1848, Vol. 7 IN presenting to our readers the sauna volume 01' this Magazine, and in asking for it the same favorable reception that has been extended to its predecessors, we should be recreant 10 our own sense of duty did we not avail ourselves of the opportunity thus afforded 10 acknowledge in suitable terms the generous support which the work from its commence ment has received at the hands of the Fraternity. Under their encourage ment it has grown up from the tender shoot to the sturdy oak, whose branch es are familiar to Brethren of every tongue and nation where civiliza tion has erected its standard and Masonry its altar. This is not a mere figure of speech. No periodical ever published in this country, has been favored with a wider circulation. It is literally true that the numbers are regularly read as they issue from the press, by subscribers in the four quarters of the globe! And however this fact may tell for the work, it Speaks well for Masonry. It shows that there is a community of senti ment - a sympathy of fellowship - a spirit of inquiry awake among the Brethren wherever dispersed over the universe.
