Book Description
This study aimed to synthesize the scattered sources of information available on the 3-year, technically oriented Fachhochschulen type of higher education in the Federal Republic of Germany. Organized into six sections, the book starts with a review of the organization of the higher education system including the trend towards a unitary system, the establishment of the comprehensives and the Fachhochschulen, institutional patterns, options for qualified school leavers, higher education objectives, and administrative and legal arrangements. The second section examines course content and organization including entrance qualifications and admissions, duration of studies, practical periods, certification, and curricular innovation. A third section seeks to assess the prestige of institutional types in particular the Fachhochschulen versus the universities. Section four provides a statistical overview in the form of tables with detailed explanation. The fifth section treats teachers in the Fachhochschulen as they compare to the staff at universities qualitatively, and with regard to career, status and duties beyond their major functions. The concluding section takes a look at the past and future of the Fachhochschulen, in particular the difficulties this type of higher education faces due to the societal environment in West Germany which continues to regard the traditional university education as best. Book Description
A distinguished work by one of America's leading scholars of higher education, Places of Inquiry explores one of the major issues in university education today: the relationship among research, teaching, and study. Based on cross-national research on the university systems of Germany, Britain, France, the United States, and Japan—which was first reported in the edited volume The Research Foundations of Graduate Education (California, 1993)—this book offers in-depth comparative analysis and draws provocative conclusions about the future of the research-teaching-study nexus. With characteristic clarity and vision, Burton R. Clark identifies the main features and limitations of each national system: governmental and industrial dominance in Japan, for example, and England's collegiate form of university. He examines the forces drawing research, teaching, and study apart and those binding them together. Highlighting the fruitful integration of teaching and research in the American graduate school, Clark decries the widely held view that these are antithetical activities. Rather, he demonstrates that research provides a rich basis for instruction and learning. Universities, he maintains, are places of inquiry, and the future lies with institutions firmly grounded in this belief.

Book Description
The Global Academic Rankings Game provides a much-needed perspective on how countries and universities react to academic rankings. Based on a unified case methodology of eleven key countries and academic institutions, this comprehensive volume provides expert analysis on this emerging phenomenon at a time when world rankings are becoming increasingly visible and influential on the international stage. Each chapter provides an overview of government and national policies as well as an in-depth examination of the impact that rankings have played on policy, practice, and academic life in Australia, Chile, China, Germany, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Global Academic Rankings Game contributes to the continuing debate about the influence of rankings in higher education and is an invaluable resource for higher education scholars and administrators as they tackle rankings in their own national and institutional contexts.
