Book Description
Studies have shown that the negative effects of credit market inefficiencies are most felt by smaller firms. Therefore, in countries such as Uganda, where micro enterprises are at the bottom of the economic pyramid, moral hazard and adverse selection severely affect their ability to access formal credit hence limiting their growth potential. Microfinance has been heralded for its use of innovative lending methods to improve access to credit. The last decade has witnessed an unprecedented increase in the outreach of micro lending institutions and the development of financial products suited to the needs of the economically active poor, who often, are unable to obtain credit from mainstream financial institutions. This book analyzes the law and economics theories on access to credit and enterprise finance and based on case studies in Uganda, presents empirical findings of the promise and limits of contractual innovations in micro credit.

Book Description
Communities around the world rely on forests for their livelihoods, and the sustainable development of small-scale, often family-run enterprises is increasingly recognised as a key to poverty reduction. This publication examines the needs of such small-scale enterprises for access to microfinance services, given the seasonal and often unpredictable nature of forest-based activities. It looks at different types of financial institutions (such as banks, non-governmental organisations, co-operatives and credit unions) as well as group lending, leasing, insurance and cash transfers. The strengths and weaknesses of different approaches are considered through four case studies which draw on experiences in Nepal, Guatemala, the Sudan and Peru.

Book Description
In response to the call by Member States for UNESCO to contribute to the Millenium Development Goals, especially Goal 1: that of halving extreme poverty by 2015, the Organization launched projects pertaining to the cross-cutting theme "the eradication of poverty, especially extreme poverty" in 2002. Within the framework of this initiative, UNESCO supported more than 40 projects to address the poverty issue from a multisectoral point of view, in order to address freedom from poverty as a human right and to develop policy-oriented activities. In the implementation of these projects the organization brought together in-house experts in Education, Culture, Natural Science, Social Science and Communication. One of the projects was on the transformation of the activicties of the clients of Micro-finance institutions (MFI) from subsistence level to micro-enterprises. This particular project commenced in 2004 and ended in 2006. The objective of the project was to facilitate the introduction of appropriate technologies into income-generating activities, financed by Micro-Finance Institutions (MFI). The specific objectives of the project were: to identify and compile information on best practice and policies for the growth and transformation of activities of clients of MFI; to disseminate and share information and experience on best practice among agencies involved in the administration of micro-finance schemes; to encourage micro-finance schemes in several African countries to adopt some of the policies and best practices identified in the project. The project was a combination of research/study and advocacy at the national level. This policy document is one of the outputs of the project.
