Other scriptural teachings respecting the Passion do, indeed, contain mysteries which the human mind cannot fathom; but these three chapters stand by themselves, the utterance of the Eternal Word, manifestly inexhaustible in Divine power and scope in their applications, both individual and collective. St. John seems to set them apart, as we might in modern times set apart some special subject, removing it from the body of the work to form a separate section or appendix. This must be the constant subject of our contemplation. Not, indeed, that we are to rest in it, as if it belonged only to this lower world which He visited in a state of humiliation. The details of His suffering as He quits the world, contain the law of His glorification now that He is at the Right Hand of the Father, and consequently the law of our own sanctification by the gifts of grace which come to us as members of His glorified Body. We must take up the Cross not merely as preliminary to participating in the glory which shall follow, but as the very law and measure of our participation in that glory.
