Excerpt from The Expulsion of the Jews From England in 1290 This Essay, to which the Arnold Prize in the University of Oxford was awarded in 1894, has appeared in the Jewish Quarterly Review for October, 1894, and January and April, 1895. I am indebted to the Editors of the Review for permission to republish it. I wish to express my obligations to Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: a Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History, compiled by Messrs. Joseph Jacobs and Lucien Wolf, and to The Jews of Angevin England, by Mr. Joseph Jacobs. Nearly all the passages bearing on Anglo-Jewish history, down to 1206, are contained in the latter book, and many of the references in the earlier part of my essay might have been made to its pages. I thought it better, however, to refer direct to the original authorities, and have, as a rule, mentioned Mr. Jacobs' book only when using passages in it which have been nowhere else printed. Some articles which I have contributed to Mr. R. H. I. Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy to the First Volume of the Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England, and to the Jewish Chronicle for April 26th, 1895, contain information bearing on the subject of this Essay. VIII.--The Temptations Of The Jews. But even for those Jews who were rich enough to take part in wholesale trade, there was still a great temptation to transgress the prohibition against usury. All the legal machinery that was necessary for the due execution and validity of agreements between Jews and Christians--the chest in which the deeds were deposited, and the staffs of officers by whom they were registered and supervised--were still maintained in some towns, since they were necessary alike for the recovery, by the ordinary process, of the old debts (many of which, in spite of the order for summary repayment in the Statute of 1275, still remained outstanding)4 and for the registration of any new agreetnents that might be made for the delivery of corn and wool, or for the repayment of money lent ostensibly without interest. "The story of how England's kings first courted then persecuted and finally expelled England's Jewish community during the Middle Ages. The first Jewish communities in the British Isles were established following William of Normandy's conquest of Britain in 1066. They settled in London and were at first courted by their Christian hosts. However, not long after attitudes began to change, reflecting the hardening of wider European attitudes. In a course of events that frighteningly mirrors that of Nazi Germany over seven centuries later, statutory regulations against the Jews, culminating with the Statute of Jewry of 1275, became the increasingly harsh and punitive. There were never more than a few thousand Jews in medieval England, but they were envied, hated and misunderstood because of their wealth and beliefs. After just over 200 years the Jewish communities of England were forcibly removed on the orders of Edward I.
