Book Description
Excerpt from The English Dominicans It will be immediately apparent to any real student of history how very cursory a survey of English Dominican life this volume is. But all I would desire for it is that under its inspiration some such student, with fuller leisure and ampler opportunity, should compile a more detailed and more accurate account of this English Province of the Order of S. Dominic, up till now so curiously ignored. I must acknowledge here my gratitude for patient help and suggestion to Father Walter Gumbley, O. P. Book Description
Excerpt from The English Dominican Province: 1221-1921 For seven hundred years the children of St. Dominic, at their Father's command and helped by his prayers, have sought to meet the needs and answer the call of each succeeding age. The present book seeks to show how they tried in the past to do their duty. Seven hundred years have passed since the first English Dominicans came to their native land to plant the Dominican tree. With many great successes and many great failures, with many great joys yet many deep and terrible trials and sorrows, their work through the centuries has gone on, and it is a great subject of rejoicing to see them to-day still at work in the land that gave them birth. To pursue the simile of the tree (for the tree that St. Dominic planted is still growing in Rome in the garden of St. Sabina) we can always expect and indeed look for many branches to wither and to die. Each year the tree puts off its leaves and each year fresh ones come up. Though the new leaves know little of the ones that went before, save to see them lying dead at the foot of the tree, it is the hidden sap unseen by both that gives life to each and clothes them all with glory year by year - how foolish if the leaves were to boast and to take the glory to themselves So when read ing these pages, if the children of St. Dominic take the glory of the tree's appearance unto themselves and boast, they will do a very foolish thing. The present book is not brought before the public eye in a boasting spirit, but in order that those who read may praise the Providence of God, who through His weak and sinful creatures has, by His life-giving grace, done such great things. Book Description
Is it possible for a true believer in Christ to apostatize? If so, how? Also, how can professing believers know if they are truly born again? What assurance can they have that they will never renounce their faith? These questions have been asked for centuries as Christians have wrestled with what Scripture says about these matters. The search for answers has instilled strong disagreements among Christian traditions. In this book, we navigate the terrain of this debate by examining the pertinent biblical data, surveying the history of major views that have been advocated by various denominations, and offering a synthesis of all this material in the hopes that readers can see how Scripture assures believers of their security in Christ.

Book Description
Dominican Penitent Women presents a fascinating overview of the spirituality, religious practices, and ways of life of medieval Italian women who belonged to the Dominican Order as lay members or penitents. Through selected texts, readers gain a fresh perspective on the institutional and spiritual foundations of Dominican lay life, but also an understanding of how these women refashioned Dominican ideals into practices that best responded to their individual and social means. Their way of life created an important alternative for women who sought religious perfection in the world. The first section consists of two penitent rules: the Ordinationes of Munio from the late 13th century and the formal penitent rule of the early 15th century, which show how penitents were to organize and live their lives. The second section is dedicated to hagiographic sources. The third section is made up of penitent women's religious writing. The texts translated here present an overview of Dominican women's literary production that complements the writings of Catherine of Siena, already available in English. While Dominican penitent women held an important position in medieval piety, aside from Catherine of Siena, their spirituality has not attracted much scholarly attention. As the first comprehensive introduction to medieval Dominican laywomen and Dominican penitent spirituality in English, this book makes a significant scholarly and spiritual contribution. +

Book Description
This volume of essays centers on the theme of doing Christian theology in the present postmodern context, a consistent theme of the teaching of John D. Castelein. The work will celebrate and honor John's years of service by representing reflections of his teaching in the thought of his students and colleagues. The essays range over such topics as theological reflections on the postmodern philosophical themes, the relations between Christian theology and culture, the contributions of philosophical hermeneutics for Christian theology, and the challenges of engaging in ministry in a postmodern context. The seventeen contributors to the volume are former students and both present and former colleagues involved in various ministries, be they in a college setting or in a local church.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Dominican Lay Brother As will doubtless be noticed, but few foot-notes and references are given in the course of these pages. The reason for this is that the book is intended for the general reader rather than for the historian, while the principal sources used in its compilation are noted earlier in the fore word. Such a plan, besides seeming the best to the writer, was advised by friends, both in the Order and out of it. Their generous aid and sympathy in the little enterprise cannot be too highly appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
