Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics The present work is designed as an introductory treatise upon the fundamental problems of theoretical ethics, and therefore to obtain standing ground from which to consider the practical questions that are affected by general principles. The book may seem rather an elaborate treatise for an introduction, but so great are the complications of ethical problems, so manifold are their interests, and so various have been opinions regarding them, that a writer to-day must choose between the perfunctory task of pro ducing a mere syllabus of words and the more important duty of saying enough to satisfy the wants of those who desire more than platitudes, and who wish some insight into the complexities of the case. The analysis of various questions has been made as complete as reasonable limits would allow, with the special pur pose Of trying to throw some light on the perplexities of ethical theories, and to present the author's conclusions regarding them. This purpose has involved a very exhaustive application of the analytic method, which may try the patience of those who desire synthetic and comprehensive results. But the writer is con vinced that we shall never get out of the wilderness of scholastic controversy and see-sawing with traditional theories until the analytic method is first carefully applied and our exact where abouts determined. We may then give a synthetic survey of the field without embroiling ourselves in the hocus - pocus of endless and futile discussions about 'words that may have a thousand meanings. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Ethics An apology is perhaps needed for overstepping bounds with so large a bundle of annotations; which, since they are not at all essential to unfolding the theory, might have been omitted, and may be overlooked. This desultory collection of citations from authorities, of quotations from general lit erature, of discussions on minor points, together with what ever occurred to me as illustrative, constitutes in some measure a variorum, an anthology. I feel quite sure that the scholarly reader will be pleased to see the very words of eminent writers, that the earnest student will be glad to have side-lights and finger-posts on the way, and that neither will be offended if here and there he stumble on an enliven ing trifle. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Morality, Vol. 1 of 2: Including Polity It is true, that the difficulty of constructing a solid System of Morality may be expected to be, in some degree, great, in proportion to its great value and extensive bear ings, when once constructed. But on the other hand, this acknowledged difficulty in the task will, it may be hoped, procure some indulgence to him who undertakes it, if he perform his labour patiently, and as far as he can, consist ently. Even if he be not wholly successful, he may produce a result of which some part may have a permanent value. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Moral Science The author to whom I am under the greatest obligations is Bishop Butler. The chapter on Conscience is, as I suppose, but little more than a development of his ideas on the same subject. How much more I owe to this incomparable wri ter, I know not. As it was the study of his ser mons on human nature, that first turned my at tention to this Subject, there are, doubtless, many trains of thought which I have derived from him, but which I have not been able to trace to their source, as they have long since become incorpo rate% with my own reflections. The article on the abbath, as is stated in the text, is derived chiefly from the tract of Mr. J. J. Gurney, on the same subject. Entertaining those views of the Sacred Scriptures, which I have expressed in the work itself, it is scarcely necessary to add here, that] consider them the great source of moral truth; and that a system of ethics will be true, just in proportion as it. Develops their meaning. To do this has been my object; and to have, in ever so humble a manner, accomplished it, I shall consider as the greatest possible success. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Moral Philosophy, and of Christian Ethics The next advantage which I shall mention as result ing nom the study of moral philosophy is, an enlarged amusintance with human nature; and who is there possessing any share of liberal curiosity for whom such a subject has no interest? Or, in what situation of life is it possible to be placed where its advantage is not very obvious! If the proper study of mankind is man, if that branch of knowledge which closely con cerns the usefulness and the happiness of every one. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Moral Science If men publish a code of laws or a system of rules which they denominate Moral Science, Ethics, or Ele ments of Morality, we have a right, it is our duty, to try that system by the standard which God has given us. In him alone all authority over the morals of men is vested, and without his will there is no moral law. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
