A digital native is an individual born between 1981 and 2001, and children born after 2001 are called millennials. Educators are expected to meet the needs of today's technologically savvy students. Some researchers assert that an academic `moral panic' is taking place that lacks the empirical and theoretical knowledge to support the claims that education needs to change to meet the needs of digital natives and millennials. The problem is that considering that the majority of students today are digital natives are educators meeting the learning needs of their students. This research study focused on the use of instructional technology and how it effects student achievement for fifth grade science and math instruction. Using the 2010 and 2011 math and science CRCT test scores, the SPSS statistical software was employed to run an independent sample t test to measure the mean difference between the experimental and control groups. The results found that the use of technological instruction in this instance did not increase student academic achievement.

This book examined student motivation and performance of fifth grade urban students in Mathematics using the lesson study model of action research. A literature review discusses the relationships found between motivation and achievement, motivation and technology, as well as technology and achievement. Interactive web-based activities were observed for motivation and engagement and alterations to the lessons were made according to that documentation. Performance was measured using standardized and teacher-created tests scores. The use of interactive computer games in mathematics lessons was found to have a positive impact on student motivation, engagement and achievement in the content areas examined since student performance on post-tests increased.

"This study explored the impact of one-to-one technology on motivating students to higher academic achievement within math and reading curricula in the fourth-grade and fifth-grade intermediate classrooms. Located at an urban/suburban PreK-5 elementary school outside of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, 14 educators implemented Apple iPad technology into their everyday instruction to engage students and personalize learning in order to accelerate equitable student achievement. Data was collected over a two year span and a comparison of the quantitative results based on classrooms without one-to-one technology versus one-to-one technology based classrooms, and used statistical measures to explore the impact of technology on motivation and academic achievement growth. Student growth was measured spring-to-spring using NWEA MAP math and reading assessments. These findings are reviewed with multiple significant differences indicated. The purpose of this quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group study was to test theories of constructivism and motivation, along with research-based teaching practices of differentiating instruction and instructing within a child's Zone of Proximal Development, in measuring the effect of computer-aided instruction on fifth grade students' attitude and achievement in math. Students in Pennsylvania completed an attitude survey at the beginning, middle, and end of the study (Pierce, Stacey & Barkatsas, 2007). Achievement was measured by the 4Sight Math assessment (Pennsylvania State Education Association, 2007) which was given at the beginning of the study, after the first seven weeks of instruction, and then at the end of the study. Five fifth grade teachers were randomly assigned as treatment or control, indicating which instructional strategy they would implement. Treatment groups received traditional direct instruction and guided practice, and then computer-aided instruction as a supplemental math practice session. Control groups participated in traditional instruction and guided practice, which incorporated Interactive Whiteboards, with only traditional methods used for supplemental practice. Data from the attitude survey were used to indicate changes that students showed after using the computer for practice as compared to using traditional methods of practice. Data from the 4Sight Math assessments were used to determine any changes in achievement after each method was implemented. Results determined that computer-aided instruction did not have a significant effect on student achievement, but did positively impact the attitude of low-achievers.

The purpose of this study was to examine fifth graders' attitudes toward mathematics and achievements in mathematics when taught in real-world situations in the outdoor setting of a national refuge. Does authentic math instruction in an outdoor environment affect students' attitudes toward math when compared to students in a traditional classroom setting? Does authentic math instruction in an outdoor environment affect students' math achievement when compared to students in a traditional classroom setting? Fifth grade students who did not participate in the program at the national refuge setting but instead were taught in a traditional classroom setting acted as the control group. The researcher reviewed achievement data and gave pre- and post-surveys on attitudes toward math to measure academic achievement and gain student's perspectives on attitudes toward math, confidence in math, usefulness of math, and usefulness of math in the outdoors. Academically, math achievement scores grew at a similar rate for both the treatment group and the control group. More questions had significant differences of the mean from the treatment group's attitude surveys than from the control group's attitude surveys. The findings from this study suggest continuing to integrate instruction in this outdoor setting to improve attitudes toward math. A recommendation is made to do a follow up survey when these same students are more developmentally mature to understand the possible longitudinal effects of the program.

There have been a number of studies investigating how attitudes such as confidence and motivation affect students and their academic achievement. This study was conducted to identify specifically how fifth grade students' attitudes affect their achievement in mathematics. Gender was studied to determine its effect on attitude and achievement. Furthermore, various types of personality traits were studied including extroversion, conscientiousness, self-control, and intellectual efficiency to determine their effects on achievement. To gather the data a questionnaire including a Likert scale survey and a math test was administered. The results indicated that there is a significant relationship between attitudes toward and achievement in math. Concerning gender, males had a more positive attitude towards math compared to females, but both genders scored approximately the same on the achievement test. Finally, extroversion was the only trait to have a significant relationship with achievement, showing that students who were more extroverted scored higher on the test. These findings indicate that educators should be aware of students' attitudes and seek to improve them in order to positively influence students' academic achievement.--P. iv.
