Book Description
Originally published in 1988, in several respects this book is a tribute to the outstanding career of the late Donald B. Lindsley (1907-2003) who, over a span of more than 55 years, had contributed greatly to the development of research in the fields of neurophysiology, psychophysiology, and experimental psychology. The impetus for the book was a conference held at UCLA to honor Professor Lindsley for his numerous and significant contributions to psychology. The chapters of this book have been written by Professor Lindsley’s colleagues and co-workers, and by former students and postdoctoral fellows. The introductory chapter, written by Lindsley himself, tells of 2000 years of "pondering". The chapter is a discussion of the lengthy history of neurophysiology, psychophysiology, and behaviour. Many of the topics mentioned in this chapter are subsequently presented in the book as reports of ongoing research in the field.

Book Description
As a consequence of the high speeds of modern aircraft, pilots must respond quickly to signal lights from the ground or other aircraft during night flight. The present study was concerned with the relation of reaction time to flash luminance and duration. Reaction time was a decreasing, negatively accelerated function of flash luminance. Flash duration had no clear effect upon reaction time. (Author).

Book Description
The literature on the reaction time to a flash of light was reviewed and 14 studies published between 1896 and 1969 were selected as having provided sufficient methodological detail and data appropriate for quantitative analysis of the effects of the following selected variables: Luminance, duration, size of stimulus, contrast, and background luminance, response to stimulus onset vs. offset of the signal, and monocular vs. binocular viewing. Conclusions were drawn about the effects of each variable and/or the status of the research literature concerning it. Mathematical relationships were developed which can be used to predict binocular RTs over a wide range of luminance, signal duration and signal size. These relationships appear sufficiently reliable to be used for purposes of equipment design. The data were also considered in theoretical terms. It was shown that the product of RT and luminance may be used to represent a response criterion in the sense implied by the theory of signal detection as developed in recent latency models.
