In the same way, there have been many changes in foreign language teaching. From voice recordings, radios to videos, the way teaching is organized has changed and is changing constantly. Ever since excerpts from a radio recording and voice recordings were introduced into foreign language teaching, they have been carefully selected by teachers and embedded, for example, in a task or exercise; learners listened attentively to the audio and tried to solve the task set. But how do you proceed with a video, which offers a visual and an auditive form of representation? Despite much research and knowledge, some questions about the relatively new medium of video remain unanswered. One of these questions is the usefulness of captioned videos.

Much research has demonstrated that the addition of text to videos, films or television programs can benefit second language learning. However, when the goal of using such materials is to develop listening comprehension skills, the addition of captions or subtitles may not lead to the anticipated results because learners may have a tendency to read the script, rather than to develop listening skills. It is not easy for learners to adjust their listening environment to suit their changing needs. This research explored the impact of giving learners control over their listening environment. Thirty-one adult students of English in Montréal, Québec viewed nine web-based videos over a two-week period. One group was given control over the use of captions, while the second group was exposed to captions on a continual basis. It was hypothesized that the learners who were given control would avoid the pitfalls of reading captioned videos, and in so doing would develop listening comprehension skills that could be transferred to materials without captions to a greater extent than the learners who were not given such control. Scores on post-treatment comprehension tests were higher for the group that had been given control over captions during the treatment, but these results were not significant. However, significant results were found when the participants were grouped by initial listening ability. Weak listeners were more likely to improve their listening skills, while stronger listeners learned more new words. The paper concludes by elaborating on the future direction of learner-controlled captioning.

The goal of the study was to determine which form of subtitles and captions was the most helpful in improving EFL university students' listening comprehension of English videos: captions, subtitles, and no subtitles. Subtitles are the text on the screen in the viewers' native language, whereas captions are the text on the screen in the target language. The study also explored how learners perceived captions and subtitles as a language learning aid. Sixty first-year university students were divided into three groups and watched the same video clips with three different caption modes (Vietnamese subtitles, English captions, no subtitles). A listening comprehension test with multiple-choice questions assessed the participants' comprehension of the videos' content. A questionnaire and a post-study interview were conducted after the test was completed. The listening comprehension test scores showed that the students in the Vietnamese subtitles group got the highest scores, followed by the English captions group and the no subtitles group. However, the Tukey HSD test indicated that the mean score for the Vietnamese subtitles group did not differ significantly from the English captions group. On the other hand, the no subtitles group was significantly different from the Vietnamese subtitles group and the English captions group. Therefore, both Vietnamese subtitles and English captions may aid students in better understanding the content of the videos than videos without subtitles. Another finding from the questionnaire and interview revealed that students showed positive attitudes toward the effects of captions and subtitles. They said it improved their listening comprehension, and captions and subtitles were not a distractions. This research discusses the educational implications of using captions and subtitles in improving EFL university students' English listening comprehension.
