In an economic climate in which institutions of higher education face increasing financial pressures, school administrators must discover cost-effective means of improving the quality of the education they provide. One way of increasing the amount of instruction within a fixed budget is by using student teaching assistants (TAs). TAs are widely employed among institutions of higher education where they are entrusted to fulfill a variety of critical duties. Despite the wide use and apparent value of teaching assistants, it appears that TAs often do not receive adequate training. This dissertation summarizes the current state of TA training as described in the literature and identifies facets of training that seem underemphasized by existing training programs. In addition, this dissertation explored how TAs are utilized in a particular graduate school of psychology, gathering information on what experienced administrators and instructors view as the advantages and challenges of employing TAs. Most importantly, this dissertation describes a unique and systematic TA training program for teaching assistants at the graduate level of psychology education: the Teaching Assistant Preparation Program (TAPP). TAPP trains TAs in four competency areas necessary for success as a TA and is guided by the principles of Adult Learning Theory. Furthermore, the program utilizes various assessment procedures to determine the effectiveness of the program. Included in this dissertation is a full description of program components, a detailed explanation of all 12 modules, and a discussion of practical considerations related to implementing the program (i.e., adaptation to other disciplines and educational settings).
