This study investigates whether successful inclusion of students with special education needs (SEN) in regular classrooms can be achieved by increasing the educational support available. We exploit two randomized controlled trials that added teacher's aides to grade 6 classrooms combined with rich register data informative about special education needs and school assignment. The teacher's aides comprised three types: A co-teacher with a teaching degree, a teaching assistant without a teaching degree, and a coach. We find that the treatments resulted in 6-7 percentage points higher inclusion of SEN students in regular classrooms and that these students gained academically. While the academic gains evaporated over time, the treated students were able to stay in regular classrooms throughout compulsory education and largely follow the same progression as their peers in the control group when they transited to upper secondary education. Especially the co-teacher intervention was effective in achieving these ends. A cost-benefit analysis suggests that teacher's aides constitute a cost-effective educational support for inclusion of SEN students.

Using data from a large-scale two-stage experiment wherein students and teachers were randomized at both kindergarten entry and first grade to be sorted into classes either with or without full-time teacher's aides, I estimate an econometric model that is uniquely suited to take advantage of this design to determine their effect on academic achievement. The identification strategy produces fully nonparametric dynamic average treatment effects for every treatment path. I find that the use of full-time teacher's aides increases student achievement, but the benefits appear to accrue mostly to those of higher socioeconomic status and to White students. A cost-benefit analysis shows that full-time teacher's aides may be a competitive alternative to class size reductions in terms of net social benefits.

Over the last decade, teaching assistants (TAs) have become an established part of everyday classroom life. TAs are often used by schools to help low-attaining pupils and those with special educational needs. Yet despite the huge rise in the number of TAs working in UK classrooms, very little is known about their impact on pupils. This key and timely text examines the impact of TAs on pupils’ learning and behaviour, and on teachers and teaching. The authors present the provocative findings from the ground-breaking and seminal Deployment and Impact of Support Staff (DISS) project. This was the largest, most in-depth study ever to be carried out in this field. It critically examined the effect of TA support on the academic progress of 8,200 pupils, made extensive observations of nearly 700 pupils and over 100 TAs, and collected data from over 17,800 questionnaire responses and interviews with over 470 school staff and pupils. Teacher's aides are used worldwide, in various school systems, although, there is no strong evidence of their impact on student outcomes. We use a randomized trial to challenge this state of evidence. We randomly allocate 105 schools to two types of treatment - aides with or without a teaching degree - compared to a control group. Both types of aides have positive impacts on test scores and the effects are persistent over time for disadvantaged students. Exploratory analyses of mechanisms suggest that a teacher's aide is not just a class-size reduction, but especially impactful when sharing instructional responsibility for the classroom.
