Book Description
Considerable information is available showing that certain monomolecular films can greatly retard the evaporation of water, and recent studies have shown that such monomolecular films will change the temperature of the water surface. Monomolecular films have also been shown to change the surface tension and surface viscosity of an aqueous substrate. The study shows that changes in these latter two properties, apart from the monolayer's effect on evaporation, can also lead to changes in the temperature of a water surface because of the effect of the film on the convective movement of surface water. It is thus apparent that the surface temperature of a layer of water will be dependent upon many environmental factors and can be influenced in several ways by the addition of a monomolecular film to the water/air interface--Abstract, p. ii.

Book Description
The loss of water from lakes, rivers, oceans, vegetation, and the earth, as well as man-made structures such as reservoirs and irrigation conduits, is a major concern of hydrologists and irrigation specialists. This loss, compounded by the lack of usable water in some areas, indicates a need for field and laboratory research that will contribute to the understanding of the processes and parameters that comprise and contribute to evaporation. This book emphasizes the process of the air-water interface and discusses such important topics as evaporation and condensation coefficients of water, heat and mass transfer, surface temperature, interfacial tension, convection, diffusion, thermal gradients, wind-generated waves, and the roles that these processes play in evaporation. The book also discusses subjects such as methods for suppressing evaporation using films, water vapor distribution, wind tunnel investigations, evaporation from water drops, preparation of pure water, molecular diffusion, the eddy-correlation method, and evaporation estimation methods. The book will be of considerable value to hydrologists, irrigation specialists, meteorologists, civil engineers, chemical engineers, hydraulic engineers, water resources specialists, water conservation specialists, geophysicists, environmental engineers, and anyone interested in understanding the evaporation of water and its consequences.

Book Description
The Biology of Particles in Aquatic Systems, Second Edition presents the latest information on particulate and dissolved matter found in aquatic habitats ranging from small streams to oceans. Only by studying this matter can we gain an understanding of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and thus be able to predict changes that may occur as these systems become stressed. Updated and extensively revised, this new edition covers such topics as classification of particulate and dissolved matter, origin and formation of particles aquatic systems, factors affecting particle aggregation, methods for capturing particles by benthic and planktonic animals, and the use of particulate and dissolved organic matter as food.

Book Description
Biophysics of the Surface Microlayer of Aquatic Ecosystems introduces the concept of the surface film, or microlayer, of natural water bodies as a specific biophysical environment. The book investigates the hydrophysics, physical chemistry, hydrochemistry and hydrobiology of the surface microlayer in detail. Biophysics of the Surface Microlayer of Aquatic Ecosystems fills the existing gaps in the literature that exist between studies of the surface film by hydrophysicists, hydrochemists and hydrobiologists, by introducing essential physical surface film phenomena to biologists, and biological surface film phenomena to physicists. This book is thus a valuable and unique reference work for oceanologists and limnologists around the world. Contents Introduction: Surface films and microlayers Thermophysics of the surface film of water Aeration through the surface film Films of surfactants at the water surface Hydrochemistry of the surface microlayer of natural water bodies Neustonology Conclusion
