Book Description
Excerpt from The Eclectic Practice in Diseases of Children for Students and Practitioners The original intent of the author was to make a revision of Scudder's Diseases of Children, but this plan was abandoned and instead of a revision, the old work was used as a basis for a new one. It will be seen that in some places, as for instance, Infantile Therapeutics, comparatively few changes have been made, whilst in others, for example, part third, the entire work has been partially rewritten. Book Description
Excerpt from An Eclectic Treatise on Diseases of ChildrenThe ailments of children require the very closest scrutiny, not that the disease itself will be more difficult to treat than if it was in an adult; but we have in the child, to rely on symptoms alone, for any history of the case given by parents may be very much warped by the ignorance and prejudices of the relator. If a mother had lost two or three children from inflammation of the bowels, she would not be likely to think of any other dis ease and to bend the symptoms to its indication. Physicians should, therefore, be on their guard, and for themselves examine closely the condition of every organ - the lungs, skin, bowels, etc. - always remembering that the indications are modified by age, sex, constitution, etc.As a general remark, children require much less medicine, and of a simpler kind than adults, even when proportioned to their age. The chief indications are the removal of' obstructions, for when this is done, 'the child's system will generally accomplish the remainder of the cure.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In some cases benefit will be obtained from the use of a decoction of equal parts of Cornus and Iiumcx, in addition to the means named. PITTBIASIS. Pityriasis is a chronic inflammation of the skin, attended with abundant furfuraceous desquamation. Its most frequent seat is the scalp, or parts covered with hair, and when the scales are removed, the part is seen to be slightly reddened in spots. Pityriasis capitis is most frequently seen in children, and is attended with but slight itching, and continued exfoliation of the epidermis. It is sometimes very persistent and intractable. In Pityriasis rubra, the disease appears in small red spots, which being aggregated form large patches, which are usually hard, butsometimes of a normal softness. These patches soon become covered with minute scabs, which are continually being thrown off and reproduced. Pityriasis versicolor appears in the same manner, but is distinguished by the variegated yellow discoloration of the cuticle. Diagnosis.--Pityriasis is usually recognized easily, as there is but little structural change of the skin, and continued and abundant furfuraceous desquamation. Treatment.--The treatment will be the same as psoriasis, Kiiich see. PSORIASIS.
