Many reasons have been assigned by the higher critics why it could not have been the production of Moses, to whom it has so long been ascribed by a venerable tradition, and one of the objections urged against the Mosaic authorship was, that written language was unknown in the age dur ing which the Jewish legislator is reputed to have lived. Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals. The existence and universality of a law Operating upon materials so various, and under circumstances so diverse, but always evolving a suc cession of terms having the same values relatively to each other, is a fact which, to the ear of reason, pro claims intelligence more loudly than any possible ar ray of isolated phenomena. But the diversity of the materials with which the law has to deal brings out a variety of special values for the general terms of the evolutionary series. Mechanical force acts with uniformity, symmetry, and always in one direction, producing results congeneric with itself; hence, in the world of mechanical force, the series are complete, calculable, and demonstrative. Or, if we penetrate to the rational element of all force, intelligent will, we should say that its self-imposed mode of activity in the mechanical world is one producing series which are complete, calculable, demonstrative. Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design.
