Book Description
Excerpt from The Doctrine of Confession in the Church of England No question affecting the Church of England can be fairly considered, except by connecting together its earlier and its later history, as presenting different phases of one living body, holding in substance the same truth. It was not the purpose of the English Reformation to ignore the traditions of the past, the changes which then took place being avowedly grounded on an appeal to an earlier standard. Its object, as the oft-repeated declarations of its leaders abundantly testify, was to correct abuses, and remove novelties of doctrine or practice, which had grown up during the middle ages at variance with primitive revelation. It is but one instance of this fundamental principle, that our existing formularies are framed upon the ancient service books of the Catholic Church. They profess to be, and are, at least in their essential features, a reconstruction of its traditionary system; and only on this ground they claim our allegiance. Book Description
Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: The Teaching of the Church of England, as Interpreted and Illustrated by the Writings of the Reformers of the Sixteenth Century The object and scope of the following treatise are strictly defined by the title of the book. It is not proposed to describe the practice of Confession and Absolution in the primitive, mediaeval, or modern Church, beyond what is necessary for the main purpose in view. That purpose is to illustrate the formularies of our Church, from the writings of the men who were most concerned in compiling them. Accordingly, the questions propounded are as follows: What was the teaching on these subjects of the leading English Divines during the reigns of Henry VIII and his successors? What action did they take, so as to bring our public services, and formal statements of doctrine, into line with what they believed to be Scriptural and Primitive truth? It is to these questions that an attempt has been made to supply an answer. Whatever may be the view taken of the teaching or practice of our English Reformers, a candid study of their writings can lead to but one conclusion. They were not only men of deep piety and strong convictions, but also of intellectual power and solid learning. Book Description
Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: An Investigation of the Teaching of the Bible and Prayer Book Mr. Gerry had made a collection of nearly all the books, large and small, on this subject, which had been published of late years in the Anglican Communion, and we went over them together. Some were excellent from the historical and theo logical standpoint, but too exclusively dogmatic. Others, again, took a line so apologetic (in the common sense of the term) as to render them quite useless for the purpose we had in view, namely, to provide a Manual which could be placed in the hands of lay people desirous of informing them selves in regard to the doctrine and practice of Confession in our Church.
