Book Description
"A career in the Victorian penal system might not seem to be a source of excitement or even great interest, but for John Buckley Castieau it was the trigger for nearly three decades of diaries that reveal not only what went on behind prison walls but also much about the colony's early history. J.B. Castieau was the governor of both Beechworth and Melbourne gaols as well as, somewhat disastrously, the Inspector-General of Penal Establisments."--Page 4 of cover.

Marked
Author: Devah Pager
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226644855
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
Nearly every job application asks it: have you ever been convicted of a crime? For the hundreds of thousands of young men leaving American prisons each year, their answer to that question may determine whether they can find work and begin rebuilding their lives. The product of an innovative field experiment, Marked gives us our first real glimpse into the tremendous difficulties facing ex-offenders in the job market. Devah Pager matched up pairs of young men, randomly assigned them criminal records, then sent them on hundreds of real job searches throughout the city of Milwaukee. Her applicants were attractive, articulate, and capable—yet ex-offenders received less than half the callbacks of the equally qualified applicants without criminal backgrounds. Young black men, meanwhile, paid a particularly high price: those with clean records fared no better in their job searches than white men just out of prison. Such shocking barriers to legitimate work, Pager contends, are an important reason that many ex-prisoners soon find themselves back in the realm of poverty, underground employment, and crime that led them to prison in the first place. “Using scholarly research, field research in Milwaukee, and graphics, [Pager] shows that ex-offenders, white or black, stand a very poor chance of getting a legitimate job. . . . Both informative and convincing.”—Library Journal “Marked is that rare book: a penetrating text that rings with moral concern couched in vivid prose—and one of the most useful sociological studies in years.”—Michael Eric Dyson

Working with Experience
Author: David Boud
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134765835
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
Every day we are confronted with problems and challenges which we address by drawing on our experience and by using this experience to find ways of learning what to do in new circumstances. Learning through experience is the normal, commonplace approach to learning and we take it for granted. Whilst much is known about teaching and being taught, far less attention has been given to learning in context - in particular, to learning outside the classroom. Yet this is in fact where most learning takes place. One possibly neglected area is the role which people, other than the learner, play in facilitating learning. This role is undertaken not only by teachers, trainers, parents and counsellors, but also by managers, supervisors, care-givers and friends. This book brings together the experiences of a number of practitioners, who write from often strongly contrasting perspectives. Such perspectives include feminism, Marxism, critical pedagogy, post-modernism and Gestalt, humanistic, clinical and transpersonal psychology.

Covid-19 Stories from the Philippines: Then and Now
Author: Suresh Nanwani
Publisher: Suresh Nanwani
ISBN: 9811894191
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
This book started from an earlier book project, Covid-19 in the Philippines: Personal Stories (Amazon Kindle, 2021). The editors collected from residents their stories in 2020, the first year of the pandemic (Then). This book reinterviews selected storytellers from the first book and asks them to share their experiences from 2020 to 2023 (Now). The book parades a list of storytellers from various walks of life, who were asked to pen down how their personalities have changed over the past four years of the pandemic. These stories are accompanied by photographs that curate the lives and experiences of the storytellers. Many of these photographs also showcase changes in Filipino culture and society. From these stories, the book shares insights on how well Filipino society survived the global crisis through the resilience and other admirable traits of Filipinos. The two-volume book project gives readers an opportunity to observe pattern nuances in behavioral changes that occurred in the country. This book will appeal to those who want to know what happened to society, particularly to the Philippines, during these troubled times. It will also appeal to those who desire to know sociological transformations – teachers, students, and the young and old – from various positions in society. The book will interest those who want to learn more about societal changes in the Philippines. Suresh Nanwani is Professor in Practice in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, United Kingdom. He is an author, a writer, and an editor, and has more than 35 years of development work experience in international organizations. He is a certified Mediator with the Center for Effective Dispute Resolution, United Kingdom; and an Associate Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation. William Loxley is a former Principal Education Specialist at the Asian Development Bank and Executive Director of the International Association for the Evaluation of Academic Achievement (IEA) headquartered in the Netherlands. He is now retired and living in the Philippines, where he advises on education pertaining to improving cognitive and emotional thinking skills among the youth. He was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines.
