"In this sermon, Burgess begins by asserting and defending the proposition that the Scriptures are the only rule in matters of religion and reformation. He then compares this Protestant principle to that of the Papists and clarifies what the call for sola scriptura really means. Afterward, Burgess gives a discussion of the breadth of its application to matters of faith and dismisses numerous substitutes for Scripture. He also encourages ministers to preach, catechize and gain a knowledge of the original tongues in which Scripture was written for more effective reformation.
