Book Description
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proven benefi cial for many types of wounds including diabetic ulcers, burns and wounds related to radiation therapy. But where did this technology come from? Who discovered oxygen? How did the Navy discover that divers could be treated for the bends in a hyperbaric chamber? How does hyperbaric science relate to airline pilots, deep sea divers and astronauts? All these topics will be explored; from the fi rst submariner to the largest hyperbaric chamber. The scientists throughout history have been gathered here along with their discoveries pertaining to hyperbaric environments. We employ hyperbaric science and the laws of gas every time we fl y in a jet, prepare food with a pressure cooker or even dive into a swimming pool. Man has always been driven to discover the depths of the ocean. But in ancient times, man was limited by the pressure that water exerts on him. How could a diver overcome this tremendous pressure? We, each and every human being on the face of the planet, have a column of air pushing down on us. This column of air goes from the top of our heads to the edge of outer space. So, the next time you feel you are under pressure, be sure to remember that YOU ARE!

Book Description
This encyclopedia adopts a wider definition for the concept of ocean engineering. Specifically, it includes (1) offshore engineering: fixed and floating offshore oil and gas platforms; pipelines and risers; cables and moorings; buoy technology; foundation engineering; ocean mining; marine and offshore renewable energy; aquaculture engineering; and subsea engineering; (2) naval architecture: ship and special marine vehicle design; intact and damaged stability; technology for energy efficiency and green shipping; ship production technology; decommissioning and recycling; (3) polar and Arctic Engineering: ice mechanics; ice-structure interaction; polar operations; polar design; environmental protection; (4) underwater technologies: AUV/ROV design; AUV/ROV hydrodynamics; maneuvering and control; and underwater-specific communicating and sensing systems for AUV/ROVs. It summarizes the A–Z of the background and application knowledge of ocean engineering for use by ocean scientists and ocean engineers as well as nonspecialists such as engineers and scientists from all disciplines, economists, students, and politicians. Ocean engineering theories, ocean devices and equipment, ocean design and operation technologies are described by international experts, many from industry and each entry offers an introduction and references for further study, making current technology and operating practices available for future generations to learn from. The book also furthers our understanding of the current state of the art, leading to new and more efficient technologies with breakthroughs from new theory and materials. As the land resources approach the exploitation limit, ocean resources are becoming the next choice for the sustainable development. As such, ocean engineering is vital in the 21st century.

Book Description
MARSWALK ONE: First Steps on a New Planet addresses the question of why we should embark on a journey to Mars, documenting what the first human crew will do when they place their feet in the red dust of the planet. The book also addresses why we need to carry out these tasks and, more importantly, what a human crew could achieve that an automated mission could not. Understanding the clear benefits of sending a human crew to the surface of Mars, and how these benefits can be seen back on Earth, is the key to sustained long-term public and political support for the programme in terms of cash and commitment. The book accepts that the journey will be made, but does not specify precisely when. Flight time, and how to get to and from the planet are discussed briefly, to understand why the suggested duration spent at Mars is reasonable. The main objective of the work is to look at what science will be done on the surface – supported by orbital operations – and what hardware and technology will be employed to achieve the mission objectives. This analysis is drawn from previous experiences in manned and unmanned space programmes, including Apollo, Skylab, Salyut/Mir, Shuttle and ISS, Viking, Luna/Lunokhod, and recent Mars missions such as Pathfinder and Global Surveyor. In addition, new interviews with key personalities involved in planning Martian exploration, and discussions about current thoughts on what we need to accomplish on Mars when we get there, will provide a lively and thought provoking account that could generate fresh debate. When the decision is finally made to go to Mars, it will be made in the knowledge that most of the world knows why we are going and what benefits mankind will see for the effort. The authors’ primary objective is to begin this understanding.

Book Description
The objective of this report is to describe the results of a worldwide industry survey of the atmospheric diving suit (ADS). A glimpse into the past of significant ADSs from Lethbridge's 1715 "diving engine" to the well- recognized JIM suit is discussed. Several facets are presented concerning present day ADSs, including a closer look at the ADSs in operation today in the offshore oil and gas industry and in the deep submergence programs of several international navies. A comparison of current ADSs against other available means of underwater intervention is made that demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of each. A general discussion of the engineering factors to be considered in the design and construction of ADSs is presented as well. Based on direct interviews with executives, technicians and operators directly involved, insight is gained into the future of ADSs, including the latest and forthcoming suits such as, the HARDSUIT 2000 - the U.S. Navy's latest submarine rescue tool, Oceaneering's WASP renovation - of which two are expected be in operation by early 2001, and the futuristic but plausible EXOSUIT, the latest prototype shallow-water swimmable ADS. The results of this survey indicate that atmospheric diving suits are a healthy and thriving community among the oil and gas industry, yet comfortable in their niche between the ambient divers and remotely operated vehicles.
