Many Mahābhāratas is an introduction to the spectacular and long-lived diversity of Mahābhārata literature in South Asia. This diversity begins with the Sanskrit Mahābhārata, an early epic poem that narrates the events of a catastrophic fratricidal war. Along the way, it draws in nearly everything else in Hindu mythology, philosophy, and story literature. The magnitude of its scope and the relentless complexity of its worldview primed the Mahābhārata for uncountable tellings in South Asia and beyond. For two thousand years, the instinctive approach to the Mahābhārata has been not to consume it but to create it anew. The many Mahābhāratas of this book come from the first century to the twenty-first. They are composed in nine different languages—Apabhramsha, Bengali, English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telugu. Early chapters illuminate themes of retelling within the Sanskrit Mahābhārata itself, demonstrating that the story's propensity for regeneration emerges from within. The majority of the book, however, reaches far beyond the Sanskrit epic. Readers dive into classical dramas, premodern vernacular poems, regional performance traditions, commentaries, graphic novels, political essays, novels, and contemporary theater productions—all of them Mahābhāratas. This book presents an analysis of the current state and the future needs of American studies of India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Although most of the developmental goals set immediately after World War II by the scholars then working in South Asian area studies have been amply fulfilled, a new stocktaking and blueprint for the future was felt to be necessary. In addition to meeting this requirement, Resources for South Asian Area Studies treats the more general needs of the field and discusses the individual papers, which were read at a plenary conference held in New York early in 1961. One of the purposes of this volume, then, is to survey the current resources and needs in the field of South Asian area studies, and this is a primary interest of the convener of the conference, the Association for Asian Studies' Committee on South Asia, whose chairman, Richard D. Lambert, edited this book. The other purpose is more specialized, and reflects the specific interest of the United States Office of Education, the sponsor of the conference. Under the National Defense Education Act this office is explicitly charged with the development of skills among Americans in the vernacular languages of the region. A companion volume to this one, edited by W. Norman Brown and entitled Resources for South Asian Language Studies, concerns the development of linguistic material and personnel. The present volume is oriented more toward the integration of those materials into area studies proper; hence the discussion of this problem that runs through each of the papers. The book should be of interest to all those concerned with the emergence from parochialism and the development of an international, particularly non-Western aspect of American higher education.

Globalisation has long historical roots in South Asia, but economic liberalisation has led to uniquely rapid urban growth in South Asia during the past decade. This book brings together a multidisciplinary collection of chapters on contemporary and historical themes explaining this recent explosive growth and transformations on-going in the cities of this region. The essays in this volume attempt to shed light on the historical roots of these cities and the traditions that are increasingly placed under strain by modernity, as well as exploring the lived experience of a new generation of city dwellers and their indelible impact on those who live at the city’s margins. The book discusses that previously, cities such as Mumbai grew by accumulating a vast hinterland of slum-dwellers who depressed wages and supplied cheap labour to the city’s industrial economy. However, it goes on to show that the new growth of cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Madras in south India, or Delhi and Calcutta in the north of India, is more capital-intensive, export-driven, and oriented towards the information technology and service sectors. The book explains that these cities have attracted a new elite of young, educated workers, with money to spend and an outlook on life that is often a complex mix of modern ideas and conservative tradition. It goes on to cover topics such as the politics of town planning, consumer culture, and the struggles among multiple identities in the city. Kinship and History in South Asia presents four papers given at a small conference of kinship studies scholars, “Kinship and History in South Asia,” at the University of Toronto in 1973.
