The feigning of psychiatric symptoms is of great concern in both clinical and forensic settings. Therefore, it is crucial to develop reliable and valid measures that are not only diagnostically valid but also allow for the detection of individuals who are attempting to exaggerate illness in order to receive monetary compensation or escape duty or work. The present study was initiated so as to assess the psychometric properties of a new measure for the assessment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the A-PTSD Scale. This 35-item self-report measure relies on the DSM-V criteria and employs indirect questioning as well as reversed items to provide more security against the feigning of symptoms. The A-PTSD scale utilizes two subscales: the primary PTSD scale which provides a total score, and a resiliency scale. The resiliency scale is intended to work as both a prognostic measure and a validity scale. Namely, there is ample research showing that individuals with such traits can successfully recover from adverse experiences. As such, they are less likely to suffer from long-term chronic PTSD symptoms. Given that stand-alone PTSD measures are impacted by confirmatory bias the A-PTSD scale was intended to be embedded within the 148-item CAP-Q, a multiscale self-report measure that includes its own traditional validity scales. The results of the study show that A-PTSD psychometric properties are not impacted by being embedded within the CAP-Q. It also had comparable reliability with existing PTSD measures and was able to discriminate between PTSD simulators and non-simulators, correlated with cognitive measures of effort. Overall, the A-PTSD appears to have incremental utility over traditional measures, although additional studies using clinical populations are recommended prior to adapting measure into clinical practice.

The purpose of this study was to assess the preliminary psychometrics of the Traumatic Events Inventory (TEI), a new Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) scale designed to identify individuals who are malingering. Participants were students and members of the community who were instructed to feign PTSD or to perform normally. The internal consistencies of the TEI full-scale as well as the subscales were high. Construct validity was examined by comparing scores on TEI to participants' performance on malingering indices of the TMT, the Digit Span, the Digit Symbol, and the RAVLT. The TEI full-scale, as well as many of the subscales, were significantly correlated with one of the most well validated malingering indices, the Reliable Digit Span (RDS), the Digit Symbol raw and scaled score, the TMT part A, and various RAVLT indices. The results of this study provide an indication of the TEI's potential ability to distinguish malingerers from those with genuine PTSD. The questionnaire may be used to help determine if an individual involved in a PTSD disability claim or lawsuit is accurately portraying their symptoms. The ability to determine which individuals have genuine PTSD will allow resources to be allocated to those who are in most need of assistance.

The number of cases of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affecting both combat veterans and survivors of armed conflict has increased in recent years. Exposure to traumatic events can cause PTSD, and the serious consequences of this disorder can often lead to impulsive and destructive behaviors such as drug abuse and uncontrollable anger. Combat related PTSD is also one of the strongest contributing factors to the high suicide risk in returning troops. This book presents the collected papers from the 2012 NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI): Invisible Wounds – New Tools to Enhance PTSD Diagnosis and Treatment (IW2012), held in Ankara, Turkey, in June 2012. This ASI was attended by 56 scientists and representatives from NATO and Partner countries, and expert contributors from nine different countries were invited to take part in the workshop. The aim of the ASI was to equip participants with an in-depth knowledge of the latest theoretical advances in neuroscience, psychotherapy and pharmacology, and thereby to assist them in the task of assessment, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of PTSD and related co-morbid disorders. The book is divided into four sections: a review of the latest science related to theoretical constructs and associated neurosciences; screening; stress inoculation training; and co-morbid issues: considering the whole person in treatment.
