Book Description
Excerpt from The Cultivation and Preparation of Para Rubber Although the cultivation Of Para rubber is at the present time almost limited to a few countries in the Eastern Tropics of the Old World, there is every prospect of its being further extended in those regions, and also of being taken up largely in the Western Tropics. There are in Tropical Africa thousands of square miles Of land suitable for the cultivation of the Para rubber tree. Upon a large extent of this land rubber-producing plants were at one time abundant, but now year by year their number is being gradually diminished, as the result Of the disastrous methods Of tapping employed by the native rubber collectors. The question of replanting these areas with Para rubber trees is well worth the consideration of the administrative authorities, and especially those in our various West African possessions. Book Description
Excerpt from Rubber: Its Sources, Cultivation, and Preparation In the present book Mr. Harold Brown gives a succinct and, within the limits of such a volume, a full account of the present position of the production of rubber, with particular reference to West Africa. Although Hevea brasiliensis, the Para rubber tree, holds a predominant position as a source of rubber and considerable attention is naturally given to it in this book, the other principal rubber-producing trees, Funtumia, Manihot, Castilloa, and Ficus, are all dealt with in some detail, as are also the Landolphia vines and other minor sources of the material. As regards the prospects of rubber-growing in West Africa, apart from the indigenous Funtumia, it will be seen that the introduction of Hevea brasiliensis has been attended with success in the Gold Coast and in Southern Nigeria. Several samples of sheet rubber obtained from Hevea plantations in Southern Nigeria have been recently examined at the Imperial Institute and found to be equal in quality to the best plantation Para from the East. The book is written partly for the student and partly for the planter, manufacturer, and merchant. The characteristics of the trees and the principal features connected with their natural occurrence and their cultivation in plantations are therefore included, as well as the more technical questions connected with the tapping, the collection and the preparation of rubber.
