Book Description
Excerpt from Canadian Constitutional History and Law For the half century immediately succeeding d Roberval's failure, Canada was all but forgotten by France. Torn by her religious wars France could not afford to look beyond her own borders. It is true that for commercial purposes the connection between the two countries never ceased. The vessels of private merchants came regularly to Newfoundland to fish and trade in furs and skins; but nothing was done towards settling and governing Canada As the century closed attention was again turned towards Canada. In 1598, the titles and privileges of de Roberval were transferred to a nobleman of Brittany, the Marquis de la Roche, by the French king, Henry IV. Henceforth we have a continuous line of trading companies and Royal Lieutenants operating in the country. It may be said, there fore, that with this event, the Constitutional History of ('anadn begins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Documents Relating to the Constitutional History of Canada, 1759-1791 Now that these collections are adequately housed in a separate building, it is possible for all who wish to consult them to do so with facility and comfort. However. In a country of such vast extent as Canada, it requires both time and means for more than a very limited number to avail themselves of these valuable accumulations at first hand. Hitherto, also, the pressing demands of the more immediate needs of life leave, for most, little leisure for the cultivation of those studies connected with the origin and significance of our national institutions, the right comprehension of which may have an important bearing on the future stability of national life. Book Description
Excerpt from Documents Relating to the Constitutional History of Canada, 1759-1791, Vol. 1 In issuing the second edition of the Constitutional Documents, 1759 1791, it hasbeen found necessary to divide the volume into two parts. This is owing partly to the additional documents included, but chiefly to the improved form in which it is printed. While the original plan of the work, as indicated in the introduction, has not been departed from, a few additional documents and some extensions of the notes have been found desirable. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of the Constitutional History of Canada: From the Earliest Period to 1901 The present edition of this book, first published in 1888, has been thoroughly revised in order to make it as useful as possible to those students in our universities and colleges who are now required to consult it in their studies of our constitutional history. I have completed to date the summary of those judicial decisions which have so far laid down important principles for the interpretation of a constitution which has evoked much learned argument in our courts and legislatures. In the performance of this task I have not attempted to include any opinions or comments of my own, but have simply condensed the essential points of each decision in the language of the learned judges, as far as practicable, and left the student to seek further elucidation in the works of such conscientious commentators as Mr. Lefroy. I have also added a chapter on the practical operation of the principles of parliamentary government in the Dominion, for the information of those readers who have neither time nor opportunity to study the elaborate treatises of Todd, May, and Anson. The text of the British North America Act, and of the amending imperial statutes, is given in full at the end of the book. A complete list of the many authorities, cited in the text of this volume, will also be found useful to students who wish to investigate our constitutional history in the most thorough manner. Book Description
Excerpt from The Constitution of Canada in Its History and Practical Working These four lectures in the Dodge Foundation are not intended to give a formal and connected account of the Constitution of Canada, but rather a popular exposition in a manner likely to be more acceptable to a non-legal audience. The subject was not of my own choosing, but was adopted at the instance of friends in Yale University who were good enough to say that the Constitution of Canada might be made interesting to the class of Americans whom these Lectures are expected to reach. Those desirous of a more extensive knowledge of the subject are advised to consult such works as the following: "Parliamentary Government in the British Colonies," by Alpheus Todd, C.M.G., etc., 2d edition, London, Longmans, Green & Co., 1894. "Parliamentary Government in England," by the same learned and accurate writer, 2d edition, London, Longmans, Green & Co., 1889. "The Canadian Constitution," by E. R. Cameron, K.C., Winnipeg, Butterworth & Co., 1915. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
