This book assembles fifteen essays by different hands on dramatic literature written in French in the twentieth century. The great majority of the essays deal with plays published after 1939. Each chapter is an original study of aspects of the work of a given author that have been overlooked or inadequately treated in the scholarly literature to date. Most of the greatest French dramatists of the century are represented in the volume, although several of the authors studied are not primarily known for their contributions to dramatic literature, while the inclusion of a 'provincial' playwright and of two Québécois dramatists seeks to surprise readers by reminding them that Paris does not enjoy a total monopoly on French-speaking theatre. The book has as its primary aim to illustrate the vitality and the sheer variety of drama written in French during the century.

Rereading Molière: Mise en Scène from Antoine to Vitez investigates the strategies employed by some of the most influential French directors of the present century to create radical interpretations of Molière's classic texts. At the same time, the book explores how these reinterpretations of Molière's popular comedies have articulated a revisionist version of French cultural history. The book focuses on five productions of two Molière plays: André Antoine's and Jacque Arnavon's 1907 Tartuffe, Arnavon's 1936 School for Wives, Roger Planchon's two productions of Tartuffe in the 1960s and 1970s, and Antoine Vitez's Molière tetralogy of 1978. These productions represent not only some of the best stagings of Molière in this century, but also key moments in the history of French theater, as each one marks an important development in the ways that plays from the classical period were staged in France. Taken together, these productions constitute an almost century-long exploration of the status and identity of "the classics" in twentieth-century French theater. This book discusses the mechanisms and patterns of staging in nineteenth-century France. Often associated with theatre and performance, staging also applies to visual arts. It is thoroughly embedded in a more general cultural development comprising the dissemination of knowledge, political awareness and consumerism. The notion of staging applies to a process of appearing, revealing and disappearing that puts forward new ways for the individual to be seen and to make the self (and the other) visible. Staging determines and questions the process of appearing and disappearing by generating connections and interactions between multiple layers of reality (i.e., artistic, theatrical, literary, and visual) – but according to what criteria, through what mechanisms and with what materials? What are the repercussions of staging, and, even more important, what does staging not show? This book argues that the notion of staging goes beyond interdisciplinarity. Looking at the different ways staging was used and conceived introduces new approaches to understanding visual culture in nineteenth-century France.
