Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...in most parts of Bolivia, which is probably the country richest in mineral wealth in the world and now, owing in great part to the liberal policy of the government and its enlightened president, General Ismael Montes, is being opened up by a network of railway lines constructed and worked under the same directorate as the Antofagasta railway. On the route from Oruro to La Paz via the railway, it is surprising to note that first one encounters much swampy country, but soon this changes for rough stony ground on which grows a short scrub affording food for llamas and donkeys, which are seen in large numbers, and later on this again changes for rough grass and one reaches the grazing ground which from time immemorial has supported the flocks of the Incas and their descendants. The photograph here reproduced of the flock of llamas with heads raised high, ears pricked forward and their whole bodies alert and quivering as the monstrous gasoline rival charges by, is undoubtedly a most prophetic picture of motor vehicle domination in the transportation world. The limitations of the llama are such that his services can only be employed in connection with the transportation of extremely rich ores of the most valuable..
