Book Description
Excerpt from The Color-Prints of Old Japan What are they? Is a question often asked by those looking for the first time at a collection of Japanese prints. To say that they are chromoxylographs, is to give an answer strictly accurate. But as this is more concise than simple, it may be well to say in non-technical, popular language that they are prints in colors from engraved wooden blocks, as many blocks and impressions ordinarily being required as there are colors. In Europe towards the end of the eighteenth century similar prints were produced, but as their reception by the public was not such as to encourage their makers, there was no development of the art comparable with that in Japan in the same century. Book Description
Excerpt from Japanese Colour Prints The body of the work is prefaced by tables to facilitate the reading of dated books and prints; an account of the Censorship of Prints a table of the Mon of the Yedo actors during the 18th century; and a table of publishers' trade-marks and seals. These will, it is believed, be of service to collectors, since the information hitherto published on these matters has been meagre and often inaccurate. At the end of the book will be found brief essays on some outstanding problems, and a select list of important books printed in colour. Otherwise we have not concerned ourselves with the books, or with the paintings, by Ukiyoye masters, except when this was necessary to elucidate the text. Book Description
Excerpt from Japanese Colour-Prints and Their Designers The social fabric in old Japan was one of sharp distinctions. At the upper end of the scale were the Emperor; the kuge, or court nobles; the daimyo, or lords of the two hundred and fifty-one provinces; and the samurai, or hereditary military men, from whom were recruited the officials, priests, and scholars. Between these and the lower classes was an almost immeasurable gulf. Highest among the heimen, or commoners, were the farmers. Below them were the artisans, and still lower were the merchants, innkeepers, servants, and the like; while lowest of all were the eta, or outcasts, a class comprising scavengers, butchers, leather-workers, and others engaged in what were considered degrading occupations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Colour-Prints of Japan: An Appreciation and History Ignoble school of wood-engraving. But the few examples sold to Dutch merchants at the end of the eighteenth century seem entirely to have escaped the notice of the Old writers on the art Of engraving, or to have been so strongly in opposition to the principles of their faith as to be deliberately ignored. It was not until the second half of the nineteenth century was well advanced that certain artists - among whom it will suffice to name Degas and Monet - possessing Specimens, were not slow to appreciate their charm and even to bow, in a measure, to their influence. Even then, popular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from 150 Rare Japanese Color Prints: Collected by Professor John Getz, New York City; To Be Sold by His Order, Wednesday Evening, January Fourteenth at Eight-Fifteen It was not until near the close of the seventeenth century that the costly painted scrolls, emanating chiefly from artists of the Mikado's Court, were supplemented by something within the reach of the less wealthy classes. This field was opened up by l\ioronobu with his simple black prints that were sometimes colored by hand. Later came the Urushi-yé or lacquer prints, when lacquer was mixed with the pig ments to give added brilliancy. After these came the first true color prints, done by'masanobu in two colors (red and green), called beni - yé. These were improved upon by Harunobu, who designed his work for more than two color-blocks; under his guidance and that of Shunsho, the art of color printing was brought to perfection.
