Book Description
By the time of the American Revolution, the College of William and Mary was already into its eighth decade as the academic source of what the new nation would become and how it would relate to the larger world. Its land had been surveyed by George Washington, and its first honorary degree had been given to Ben Franklin. It would go on to educate two signers of the Declaration of Independence, three American presidents, and three justices of the Supreme Court. Chartered by British royalty in 1693, the college retains that connection to its roots into the 21st century. Remarkably through history, the College of William and Mary was, and remains, a public university¿one of 16 in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At a time in American history when the 18th-century thought and practice of Thomas Jefferson has become part of the contemporary conversation, the college from which he graduated in 1762 continues to pursue his simple notion that ¿worth and genius [be] sought from every condition of life.¿

Category : Performing Arts

Pages : 48
Book Description
Afong Moy is fourteen years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” For the next half-century, she performs for curious white people, showing them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy’s life, THE CHINESE LADY is a dark, poetic, yet whimsical portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

The Iranian Metaphysicals
Author: Alireza Doostdar
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691163782
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
What do the occult sciences, séances with the souls of the dead, and appeals to saintly powers have to do with rationality? Since the late nineteenth century, modernizing intellectuals, religious leaders, and statesmen in Iran have attempted to curtail many such practices as "superstitious," instead encouraging the development of rational religious sensibilities and dispositions. However, far from diminishing the diverse methods through which Iranians engage with the immaterial realm, these rationalizing processes have multiplied the possibilities for metaphysical experimentation. The Iranian Metaphysicals examines these experiments and their transformations over the past century. Drawing on years of ethnographic and archival research, Alireza Doostdar shows that metaphysical experimentation lies at the center of some of the most influential intellectual and religious movements in modern Iran. These forms of exploration have not only produced a plurality of rational orientations toward metaphysical phenomena but have also fundamentally shaped what is understood as orthodox Shi‘i Islam, including the forms of Islamic rationality at the heart of projects for building and sustaining an Islamic Republic. Delving into frequently neglected aspects of Iranian spirituality, politics, and intellectual inquiry, The Iranian Metaphysicals challenges widely held assumptions about Islam, rationality, and the relationship between science and religion.

Equity in School-Parent Partnerships
Author: Socorro G. Herrera
Publisher:
ISBN: 0807763780
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
"The contents of this book are extremely timely as more US public schools are moving to "push-in" programs for their English Learners (ELs) or following the increasing trend to launch DL programs as a way to offer instruction support for ELs. In this book, the authors use culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families as an umbrella term to discuss ESL and DL families. This book is intended to reach ESL teachers, content-area teachers teaching ELs, dual language teachers, administrators, and school personnel who work and support CLD parents. Despite the varied instructional approaches to addressing ELs needs, limited scholarship exits on the marginalization of CLD parents as leaders in the decision-making processes of today's schools. This book examines the divisive practices of existing parental involvement models that prevent parental engagement in ESL and DL contexts; the importance of addressing parental engagement amidst current political discourse surrounding immigration that further alienates EL parents; and the need for more proactive, action-based models that identify contributions of parents and community partners. By re-defining parental engagement as a mutually inclusive theoretical perspective, school, community and home become conduits for transforming student learning and improving school climate"--
