Book Description
The topic of this book, Collectins, is a family of proteins whose major function is in innate immunity, where Collectins act as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). In general they recognize targets such as microbial surfaces and apoptotic cells, and once bound to a target, Collectins promote the clearance of microorganisms and damaged host tissue. New cell-surface proteins and glycoproteins, which act as Collectin receptors, are currently being identified. Some Collectins, particularly MBL, activate the complement system, which enhances the ability of antibodies to fight pathogens, via three MBL-associated proteases, the MASPs. Additionally, recent research has begun to show wider-ranging activities of Collectins, such as: · Their role in metabolism, and therefore their involvement in lifestyle diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. · Their ability to modulate the adaptive immune response, as well as to recognize and trigger apoptosis of cancer cells, which makes them effective in the annihilation of cancer cells with multiple mutations. · The regulation of their expression by gonadal steroid hormones implicates them with critical roles in both male and female fertility. · Altered levels of Collectins have been associated with various autoimmune diseases. This book brings together current knowledge of the structure, functions and biological activities of Collectins, to describe their integral role in human health.

Book Description
Pili in Mycobacterium Tuberculosis: Structure, Function, and Therapeutic Advances discusses the types of pili produced by the tuberculosis-causing bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTBC. The book examines the structure of pili shown under electron and atomic force microscopy and by using whole genome sequencing, outlines the importance of pili in mycobacterium tuberculosis. It also explores the role of pili in bacteria-host interactions and in drug development and delivery. Pili in Mycobacterium Tuberculosis opens with an overview of the structure, synthesis, and function of pili in bacteria. This includes taxonomy and the role of pili in diseases. The book also examines the preparation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for electronic and atomic microscopy and looks at the different life cycles and susceptibility patterns of MTBC. It does on to discuss the expression and function of pili using whole genome sequencing and PCR-based methods and delves into bacteria host interactions. Lastly, it explores the development of new drugs and its delivery by pili. • Covers the structure, synthesis, and function of pili produced by the tuberculosis-causing bacterium, MTB• Introduces seven types of pili in MTB• Explains the mechanism of bacteria–host attachment and importance of this phenomena in MTB pili and other bacteria• Emphasizes the use of advances techniques to study and investigate the TB-bacilli and its interaction with host cells

Book Description
This volume surveys the chemistry, biochemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism and pharmacological properties of lectins. Lectins, which are most commonly found in plants, are widespread natural products with striking biological activities. Their specific ability to recognise and bind to simple or complex saccharides facilitates their role as effective information protein molecules. As agents of cell-to-cell recognition, lectins promote symbiosis between plants and specific nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria. As natural defensive molecules, they can protect plants against predators such as bacteria, fungi and insects. As part of our diet, lectins are powerful exogenous growth factors in the small intestine and influence our health, the digestive function and the bacterial ecology of the alimentary tract. Lectins are also important research tools in preparative biochemistry and cell science.
