Book Description
This book, first published in 1974, shows how social class and origins in mid-nineteenth century Aberdeen were reflected in religious belief and observance, and how in turn this acted as a catalyst for change in society. Through a detailed analysis of this topic, particularly in relation to the Presbyterian denominations, the author directs fresh light on the emergence and development of the Free Church. The Disruption in the Church of Scotland is examined within the context of changes which had taken place in the form of industrial production, whereby the city as a centre of manufacturing had replaced the domestic production of the countryside. The concomitant changes in the social structure, and the divisions which resulted within the old ruling families, are probed. The social patterns of adherence to the Established and Free Churches are analysed in detail, and the subsequent development of the Free Church is examined in terms of the social support it enjoyed in 1843.

Book Description
St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Carden Place, Aberdeen, was founded under the influence of the Oxford Movement in 1863. Using original sources, this book examines the church's controversial beginnings, its history through the twentieth century including the aftermath of a devastating bomb in the Aberdeen Blitz of 1943, and the people who formed it. With chapters on church music and architecture as well as a brief overview of the church as it is today, this illustrated account places St. Mary's in the history of the Scottish Episcopal Church and of Aberdeen.

Book Description
Aberdeen was settled by Scottish immigrants who moved up the Cape Fear River from the North Carolina coast. Before the railroad, the region consisted of small farms and a single church. The arrival of the Raleigh & Augusta Railroad in the mid-1870s was the first major impetus for growth in and around Aberdeen. Soon thereafter, the lumber industry expanded and naval stores were established. This advancement contributed to the growth and success of Aberdeen as a major rail and commercial center. In the 20th century, this growing community underwent development and became a popular shopping destination featuring a vibrant and historic downtown commercial district. Aberdeen Lake provides recreational and social activities and is an integral part of the public parks system. Aberdeen shares the remarkable history of a community that has grown and prospered in the North Carolina Sandhills.
