Excerpt from The Church in England, Vol. 2 of 2 The translators commenced their labours in 1606, and after five years of quiet work the result appeared in the Authorized Version of 1611. The final corree tion of the whole, and the task of writing the argu ments of each book, were entrusted to Thomas Bilson, Bishop of Winchester, and Dr. Myles Smith. Dr. Myles Smith also wrote the Dedication and the Preface, the former of which we could have well spared. Book Description
Excerpt from The Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been pointed out that in the course of the Church's history there are two special eras of what is sometimes called "Symbolism," i.e. Creed-Making, or the composition of formularies of faith, - the fourth and fifth centuries, and the sixteenth. The reason for this is obvious. Each age was emphatically an age of religious controversy. After the victory of Constantine over Maxentius and the publication of the Edict of Milan by the joint Emperors Constantine and Licinius (A.D. 313), religious questions and discussions attained a publicity which had hitherto been impossible. There followed, of necessity, a period of definition of the Church's faith. The great Arian controversy had already begun when Constantine found himself sole ruler of the Roman Empire; and now questions were asked as to the meaning of the Church's creed which, when once formally raised, required a clear answer. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of England, Vol. 1: A History for the People; The British and Anglo-Saxon Church Boleyn; to his passionate desire for a divorce from the stately Spanish princess. The wife of his youth; or to the vulgar greed of the same irresponsible monarch and his powerful satellites, which coveted the spoils of the glorious abbeys, and the long-accumulated wealth of the Benedictine and his brother servants of God. These vulgar passions were, after all, but very small influences in bringing about the change which passed over the Church of England - the change men call the Reformation. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Church of England, Vol. 1: In the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire It is the object of this work to trace the history of the Church of England in the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire, from the earliest period in which the attempt was made to acquire any of them, to the present day. The first Volume has only brought the enquiry to the beginning of the reign of Charles the First; and, as this embraces but a small portion of the period which it is proposed to traverse, the reader may probably be alarmed at the almost interminable length of the course which here seems to be opened before him. It is necessary, therefore, to state, that much preliminary matter required to be noticed in this Volume, the examination of which, I trust, will tend greatly to facilitate my future progress. In the first place, the condition of our Transatlantic Colonies in early times, and the trials which the Church in those Colonies had consequently to encounter, reflected, for the most part.
