This book is the first attempt that has been made to set forth between two covers the Church's whole duty to her young men and women at college. Like all pioneer treatises it has defects. It will be for the good of the cause if con structive criticisms are sent to the writer. The con elusions of this book are not final, for student work is too new to be as yet beyond the experimental stage. It is rhetorically awkward in the English language to include men and women in the same sentence. The repetition of the words men and women students, or the pronouns he and she in all their cases, is unpleasant to the eye and ear. Consequently the reader must in most cases consider the pronoun to be generic and the word student to cover both men and women. Excerpt: ... appendix iii Conferences between the Agencies at Work in the University Field Three times have the representatives of the following organizations met in conference over their common task, twice in Cleveland, Ohio--March, 1915, and November, 1916--and once in Chicago--January, 1918: The Council of Church Boards of Education. The Conference of Church Workers in State Universities. The Student Young Women's Christian Associations. The Student Young Men's Christian Associations. The first Conference appointed a Committee of Reference, which carried on important investigations during the interval between the conferences. The reports of these conferences are given in a pamphlet entitled Christian Work in State Universities. (See Bibliography of this book.) The foreword of this pamphlet reads: "The three Conferences whose findings are recorded in this Report represent a very honest effort upon the part of the organizations involved, to face the great and growing need of Christian work among the students in our large State Universities and to unite their efforts so effectively that Christ shall have opportunity to claim for His own service the trained abilities of these young men and women. "There is hardly a phase of Church or Association service for students that has not been considered. The findings may, of course, be far from perfect; but they represent at least the main lines of advance upon which all could agree, and hence constitute a basis for experiment which if widely accepted may yield results from which even more effective principles of service may be deduced." Excerpt from The Place of Church History in the College Course of Study: A Paper Read Before the American Society of Church History in Washington, D. C., Dec. 31, 1890 It may be doubted whether among the one hundred and eighty non-catholic colleges of America out of the two hun dred and ten which I am considering, there are a score that offer the student as condensed and effective a statement re specting Luther and his work, as this which is presented to the average student of the thirty Catholic colleges. The seventh class, which do not in any way touch Bible or church history, is composed mainly of colleges supported by the State. In five or six instances the State schools, supported by the United States grant, are practically in union with colleges Of independent or denominational Char acter, as, for example, Brown, Dartmouth, Amherst, Yale, and Cornell. It is a noteworthy fact that in the most of such cases, while the authorities of the regular college Offer something of Bible study to their students, they seem to feel under obligation to eliminate from the curriculum of the students in the school of science any study that pertains in any way to the Christian Church or religion. Brown University seems to be an exception, in that it requires the study of the evidences of Christianity from Seniors, without reference to the particular course of study pursued. For a comparison with American colleges, our best re source abroad is the German gymnasium. Plainly the trend Of education in our country is more and more towards the recognition of the college as a school which will, when thoroughly administered, perform a work resembling that of the German school in languages and literature, in mathe maties and natural sciences, but which will perhaps advance somewhat beyond the gymnasium or real school in its teach ing of political and mental science.
