Book Description
Excerpt from The Chronicles of an Old Campaigner M. De La Colonie, 1692-1717: Translated From the French I hope that the interest which the perusal of these old records afforded me may serve as my excuse for introduc ing the work to the notice of the public. I have omitted certain passages describing events in which M. De la Colonie took no personal part, and of which he was not an eye-witness. Most of these events have passed into history in a form more accurate than the rumours of the day which M. De la Colonie records. I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to my friend, W. F. Felkin, who has very ably assisted me in elucidating the occasional doubtful diction of M. De la Colonie, and in curtailing the inherent prolixity of his story. Book Description
An essential first hand account from a French soldier Personal accounts by French soldiers have not proliferated in the English language and those that concern the Napoleonic Wars are much sought after by readers and invariably repay the effort to find them with an interesting tale, compellingly told. This account concerns another period some one hundred years or so before the time of the First Empire, but it too is a first rate personal account full of anecdote, drama, duelling, camp and campaign life, battles and sieges that will not disappoint. This highly regarded French soldier fought in the War of the Spanish Succession-among others-and so the reader will understand what warfare was like on the other side of the lines from the great Duke of Marlborough and his ally, Eugene of Savoy. Seconded to service by the Elector of Bavaria, the author was a committed and aggressive soldier who, together with his French contingent, invariably found himself in the thick of the action. This is an essential and riveting narrative from the time when central Europe was boiling with dispute and the Bourbon monarchy was at the pinnacle of its power and influence. Highly recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Description
Saul David's All The King's Men is a thrilling history of the British Redcoat from the English Civil War to Waterloo. Between 1660 and 1815 British supremacy on foreign soil was near total. Central to this success was the humble redcoat soldier who showed heroism in battle and stoicism in peace, despite appalling treatment. This is their story: of brutal discipline and inedible food, of loyalty and low pay, of barracks and battlefield - of victory, defeat, life and death. Praise for All The King's Men: 'An extraordinary story, packed with drama, incident and great characters...All The King's Men is all you could hope for...Quite an achievement', Patrick Bishop, Country Life 'A heady mixture of heroism, incompetence, devilish tactics and plain good luck', Sunday Times 'Filled with swashbuckling derring-do, the reek of blood and gunpowder, combined with shrewd analysis of power, war and psychology', Simon Sebag Montefiore Saul David is Professor of War Studies at the University of Buckingham and the author of several critically acclaimed books, including The Indian Mutiny: 1857, Zulu and, most recently, Victoria's Wars: The Rise of Empire. He recently presented 'Bullets, Boots and Bandages' for BBC 4 and is a regular contributor to Radio 4.
