Book Description
Excerpt from The Christ of the Gospels I have sought to carry out the purpose of the Founder of this Lecture as indicated in the Trust Deed, and, with others, I have found it difficult in a single treatise to meet the needs of a popular audience, and to satisfy the demands of those already versed in biblical study and criticism. The subject committed to me is one which will exhaust powers far greater than those which I possess, but such study as I have been able to secure has convinced me of its supreme importance at the present time, and I have endeavoured to bring before those who have entered into the Methodist Com munion of the Christian Church the findings of recent criticism of the Gospels, and to indicate the effect of such criticism on the message which those Gospels declare. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel of Christ Divine mind and will, is virtually anticipated in them; so wonderful, that most men pass them by as too good to be true; so potent with life and grace, that the Christian has often to ask himself if they are really meant for him. P1ain1y, if they are true, they are the entire Gospel; containing all we need to know about God, and Christ, and ourselves; not what may be ours to-morrow, but what is given to us to-day - whether we know or care. Book Description
Excerpt from The Divinity of Christ: In the Gospel of John Speak on it for a week to the Sunday school teachers of Atlanta in October induced me to write out the five addresses in the hope that other Sunday-school teachers and ministers might at least be stimulated to a fresh study of this most wonderful book in all the world. There are all sorts of books about the Gospel of John and a brief bibliography is appended at the end of this volume. I do not undertake to write a full com mentary on John's Gospel, but rather to develop the thesis of the book, as I understand it, with brevity and clearness so that the average man may understand the book better as a whole and in detail as he is led to read it with new interest. John can help us to see Jesus and thus to see God. It is just this vision of God in Christ that makes life worth while and rich. This is a good time for us. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end.
