Book Description
Excerpt from The Cornell Chime: A Brief History of the Bells Amid all the doubts and worries of the early days of Cornell University nothing inspired more hope and cheer than thegift of its chime. It came most unexpectedly. On a pleasant September morning there appeared, in the little public library which Mr. Cornell had founded in Ithaca, Miss Jennie mcgraw, who, finding President White at work among the newly arrived books temporarily stored there, asked him some kindly questions and was shown some of the volumes most likely to interest her. Next day word reached the President that she was greatly pleased with what she had seen and wished to make to the new institution some gift showing this feeling. The result was a suggestion from him to the late Judge Finch that such a gift might take the form of a chime of bells, and the Judge, entering into this idea fully, conveyed it to the young lady, who instantly accepted it. Book Description
Excerpt from Bells: Their History, Legends, Making and Uses At first there seemed to be little material available. Mr. William Rice's books about carillons, and Mary Tabor's small bell anthology were useful American books on the subject. The Old World offered several interest ing volumes, many of them gray with age and hidden away as if the world were to forget the old legends and superstitions and the many interesting facts about the bell, which has been a common messenger to all mankind. Book Description
The Chinese made the world's first bronze chime-bells, which they used to perform ritual music, particularly during the Shang and Zhou dynasties (ca. 1700-221 B.C.). Lothar von Falkenhausen's rich and detailed study reconstructs how the music of these bells—the only Bronze Age instruments that can still be played—may have sounded and how it was conceptualized in theoretical terms. His analysis and discussion of the ritual, political, and technical aspects of this music provide a unique window into ancient Chinese culture. This is the first interdisciplinary perspective on recent archaeological finds that have transformed our understanding of ancient Chinese music. Of great significance to the understanding of Chinese culture in its crucial formative stage, it provides a fresh point of departure for exploring later Asian musical history and offers great possibilities for comparisons with music worldwide.

Book Description
Excerpt from Church Bells and Ringing I have selected five-bell peals because so many parishes have five or six bells, and these peals can be rung upon either number, and also on ac count of the length to which six or seven-d peals would extend, as will be seen by the table annexed to this paper. It is true that peals are so arranged as to bring the bells round in a much shorter time than all the changes would occupy, otherwise peals on from eight to twelve bells could never be rung at all, still they would be of a length far beyond the limit of these pages.
