Phosphorus in Action
Author: Else K. Bünemann
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642152716
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 485
Book Description
Phosphorus (P) is a finite resource which is essential for life. It is a limiting nutrient in many ecosystems but also a pollutant which can affect biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems and change the ecology of water bodies. This book collects the latest information on biological processes in soil P cycling, which to date have remained much less understood than physico-chemical processes. The methods section presents spectroscopic techniques and the characterization of microbial P forms, as well as the use of tracers, molecular approaches and modeling of soil-plant systems. The section on processes deals with mycorrhizal symbioses, microbial P solubilization, soil macrofauna, phosphatase enzymes and rhizosphere processes. On the system level, P cycling is examined for grasslands, arctic and alpine soils, forest plantations, tropical forests, and dryland regions. Further, P management with respect to animal production and cropping, and the interactions between global change and P cycling, are treated.

Below-ground Interactions in Tropical Agroecosystems
Author: Meine van Noordwijk
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 0851996736
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
Below-grownd interactions are often seen as the 'dark side' of agroecosystems, especially when more than one crop is grown on the same piece of land at he same time. this book aims to review the amount of light he past decade of research has shed on this topic. It also aims to review ohw far we have come in unravelling the positive and negative aspects of these interactions and how, in dialogue with farmers, we can use the generic principles that are now emerging to look for sita-specifics solutions.

Soil Phosphorus Fractions in Victorian Grain Production Systems
Author: Dang Thanh Vu
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Grain
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
A survey was undertaken of changes in P status of the topsoil in farmers' paddocks compared to baseline conditions using a 'fence-line' methodology across a wide range of soil types in northem Victoria. Changes in the amount and distribution of P amongst different soil fractions were assessed in 43 different sites and related to farmer practises/crop rotations, soil type, climate and a range of other soil chemical and physical properties. The highly positive P balance in 27 farmers' paddocks indicates a potentially high rate of P fertilization in those paddocks. The excessive P has been transformed into both labile and non-labile pools depending on the general chemical-physical properties of a particular soil. In particular, in soil with a sandy texture and low oxalate-extractable Al and Fe such as the sandy Calcarosols, the fertiliser P was preferentially transformed into labile and moderately labile pools. The information received will be helpful for P recommendations that would help optimise the use of P fertilisers for farmers in these regions.
