Book Description
Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 23: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; July, 1903 The ideal safe family laxative, known as - Syrup of Figs is a product of the California Fig Syrup co., and derives its laxative principles from senna, made pleasant to the taste and more aceptable to the stomach, by being combined with pleasant aromatic syrups and the juice of figs. It is recommended by many of the most eminent physicians, and used by millions of families with entire satisfaction. It has gained its great reputation with the medical profession by reason of the acknowledged skill and care exercised by the California Fig Syrup co., in securing the laxative principles of the senna by an original method of its own, and presenting them in the best and most convenient form. The California Fig Syrup co., has special facilities for commanding the choicest qualities of Alexandria senna, and its chemists devote their entire attention to the manufacture of the one product. The name - Syrup of Figs - means to the medical profession the family laxative, manufactured by the California Fig Syrup C0. And the name of the Company is a guarantee of the excell ence of its product. Informed of the above facts, the careful phy sician will know how to prevent the dispensing of worthless imitations when he recomends or prescribes the original and genuine - Syrup of Figs. It is well known to physicians that Syrup of Figs - is a simple, safe and reliable laxative, which does not irritate or debilitate the organs on which it acts, and, being pleasant to the taste, it is especially adapted to ladies and children, although generally applicable in all cases. Book Description
Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 66: July, 1912 The State has recognized the demand upon it for help in the education of the doc tors of the State by erecting and equipping the new State Medical Laboratory Building at the State University. This is a fitting token of the State's appreciation Of her doctors. It is also a declaration on the part Of the State Of its purpose to lend a helping hand in the education of our future doctors. The doctors Of the State should in return show their appreciation of the State's effort by using their in uence to the end that a greater number Of young men shall take the first two years of their medi cal course at this State institution, in place of going out of the State, as so many Of them have been doing. The State has properly recognized the great debt that we owe to laboratory re search work, which has revealed to us the true cause of most of our infectious diseases and how we may prevent them. It has pro vided in the State medical building a num ber of well equipped private laboratories, where any doctor Of the State may go and carry on, for a time, his research work, without the expense of having to build and equip his own laboratory. The best field for discovery and usefulness on the part Of any young doctor is in laboratory work. I commend to you these laboratories. Pellagra is today puzzling and vexing the medical profession Of the country more than any other one disease. I would suggest that some of our young men take this problem into one Of these private laboratories and these solve it, bringing with its solution great honor to this society, and undying fame to himself. Another problem that I would suggest for solution, is the finding Of an efficient remedy for hookworm disease, that is not in itself a poison. Who will be the young doctor to find that remedy? Book Description
Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 14: January, 1899 In considering this subject of injures to the head there are several facts that at once attract one's attention, and to a greater or less extent impress themselves on one's mind. First we notice where an injury may be situated. It may be purely external, a scalp wound only. The bony skull may be involved and also the brain, or we may have a serious brain lesion and yet the scalp and skull are practically sound and normal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 68: July-December, 1913 I am sorry not to be able to state the exact growth of the society for the past 10 years. For the six years of which we have a correct record, the number of members has increased nearly being 769 in 1906 and 1100 this morning at o'clock with two counties, Davie and Richmond, still to be heard from. There are 1700 active practitioners in the State. This makes nearly 600 who do not belong to the society. Not a bad showing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 16: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; January, 1900 If the inflammation is due to gonorrhea, puerperal or other sepsis, the symptoms are very much more severe, and the physician is apt to be called. Whatever the cause may be the symptoms are more or less severe as the inflammation involves the cervix, the body, or both. There is usually more or less menstrual derangement, in which the flow may appear too early, be deferred, or be too scant, or too free; the only regular ity being its irregularity.
