Book Description
Excerpt from Charleston Medical Journal and Review, 1859, Vol. 14 I do not intend to enter upon, or discuss the question of its contagiousness in the familiar sense attached to this word. The poison which gives rise to it, is contained, we all know, in the atmosphere; on board a ship it exists often with such virulence, that all are attacked who venture to remain on board even a short time, not having gained immunity by acclimation, or previous seasoning. Nor does any one doubt that the immediate vicinity of such a ship is dangerous in greater or less degree. And farther, as atmospheric air, with all its intermixtures and qualities, and properties, must be entangled in certain porous articles, it is reasonable, on all fair and theoretic grounds, to believe that many such articles may become fomites, and convey the disease, or the cause of the disease for we do not, and cannot, know how much may be contained of the poison in any given bulk of air, or how much air must be inhaled or applied to the surface to be efficient. Book Description
Excerpt from The Charleston Medical Journal and Review, Vol. 9: January 1854 In all cases in which the soft parts are well relaxed, and the os uteri fully dilated or dilatable, and the labour has not advanced so far, or the membranes been ruptured so long, and the uterus so forcibly contracted upon its contents, as to render the operation impracticable, without the exertion of a considerable degree of force, we should proceed to deliver at once by version. Where the membranes are ruptured, immediate action is the more imperatively called for, to avoid the increased diffi culty to the operation, which would be occasioned by the complete escape of the liquor amun, and the rigid contraction of the uterus upon its contents. Excerpt from Charleston Medical Journal and Review, 1874, Vol. 1 It is useless then for any one to say that there is no need to re establish it 'in this important commercial emporium of the South, and in this ancient city by the sea, which has attained a fame greater than it had in earlier days, when it was the centre of the highest social refinement; when the high standing, if not the superiority of its institutions of learning, its position, its resorts of amusement, the quaintness of its architecture and other attractions and peculiarities drew to it students, tourists and others who came from motives of business or leasure. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Medical Journal, 1875, Vol. 3 The tincture is not uniform, varying in strength and appearance. Whilst one sample would be colorless, another would deposit a brownish sediment. Again, the taste cannot be disguised, and gives the physician much trouble to overcome the prejudices or fears of his patients. As an illustration, I will state: I gave a very intelligent gentleman a preparation containing the tincture of phosphorus. In a few hours he returned. There being other persons in the office, he asked for a private interview. This being granted, he stated, that being a good friend to me, he desired to be careful that he should say nothing before others that might tend to destroy their confidence in my skill, etc. Whilst admitting the fact that all persons are liable to make mistakes, he hinted at the fact that some mistakes were followed by serious results.
