Book Description
The CDF silicon vertex detector is being upgraded for use in Run II of the Fermilab collider. The increased luminosity in Run II, coupled with the desire for increased acceptance and secondary vertex triggering, necessitates a complete redesign of the previous generation tracker. Details of the design are described.

The Run IIb Upgrade of the CDF Silicon Detectors
Author:

Book Description
A substantial portion of the Run IIa silicon detectors of the CDF experiment will not perform adequately for the duration of Run IIb (15 fb−1) because of radiation damage. The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX-II) and Layer 00 will be fully replaced at the end of Run IIa. The Run IIb silicon tracker has a baseline design that safely achieves the required radiation tolerance by using single sided sensors that are actively cooled. The new Run IIb castellated layout contains more silicon surface area and has a more uniform radial distribution. It minimizes the number of hybrid and sensor varieties providing quick construction and assembly. The total mass in the tracking volume is reduced by eliminating unnecessary the passive material from the CDF volume.

Book Description
A next generation silicon vertex detector is planned at CDF for the 1998 Tevatron collider run with the Main Injector. The SVX II silicon vertex detector will allow high luminosity data-taking, enable online triggering of secondary vertex production, and greatly increase the acceptance for heavy flavor physics at CDF. The design specifications, geometric layout, and early mechanical prototyping work for this detector are discussed.

Book Description
The authors describe the operation and performance of the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX'), which replaced the CDF SVX detector for run lb of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The new features of the SVX' include AC coupled readout, Field OXide Field Effect Transistor (FOXFET) biasing and radiation hard front end electronics. The authors expect the detector to survive beyond the 100 pb[sup -1] of data taking anticipated for the present CDF physics run. Preliminary results from the collider data show that the detector has a resolution of about 12 [mu]m. This provides a powerful tool to do top and bottom physics.
