Book Description
There are many little things that happen in everyday life that we can be thankful for. A good cup of tea or coffee? A homemade apple pie? A nice song? A stranger's smile? A friend who cares? Oftentimes, though, we lose our focus, and, alas, we tend to focus on the negative....which, in turn, encourages that black cloud from following us around during the day. We can change that! Does it take some effort? You bet! But what a reward for our work! Our attitude changes our life...it's that simple. Our good attitude greatly affects those that we love, making our homes a more cheerier and peaceful dwelling! To have this control...to be able to turn around our attitude is a tremendous thing to think about! This Gratitude Journal is here to help you focus on the good, the beautiful, the praiseworthy. "For the rest, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever modest, whatsoever just, whatsoever holy, whatsoever lovely, whatsoever of good fame, if there be any virtue, if any praise of discipline, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8 - Douay Rheims). Yes, we need to be thinking of these things throughout the day!You will be disciplined, the next 30 days, to write positive, thankful thoughts down in this journal. You will be thinking about good memories, special moments, things and people you are grateful for, lovely and thought-provoking Catholic quotes, thoughts before bedtime, etc. Saying it, reading it, writing it, all helps to ingrain thankfulness into our hearts...and Our Lord so loves gratefulness! It makes us happier, too!

Book Description
Beyond Tradition and Modernity is a collection of original essays which considers the complexities behind the dramatic changes generated in China during the last decades of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century. As men and women literally-or metaphorically- crossed into new geographical worlds, they came to express their understanding of the expanding universe in a variety of ways which cannot be neatly labeled either traditional or modern. The contributors to this volume demonstrate how the creativity of these writers marked a new moment in historical and literary practices transcending this usual binary and simple teleology. Their essays expose how the ethnographic, literary, and educational projects of these men and women gave voice to new ideals and ideas that reflect the changing boundaries of gender at this time.

Book Description
Pregnancy loss is profoundly complex, ambiguous, and alienating, but telling women who have procured abortions that they are murderers and sinners is not the best way forward. Magisterial teachings on abortion are too often presented as moral absolutes, when in fact moral absolutism distorts the rich wisdom of the Catholic intellectual tradition. This book initiates a new conversation about women’s experiences of miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion, arguing that we need not approach these difficult life experiences in a simplistic way. Dr. Reimer-Barry argues that both the pro-life and pro-choice movements make important and valuable claims, yet each approach on its own is flawed. Drawing on the framework of reproductive justice together with Catholic social teaching, Dr. Reimer-Barry suggests a new way forward for abortion discourse that takes seriously the full human dignity of women and the intrinsic (though not absolute) value of prenatal life. She argues that instead of thinking of the Church as a moral teacher—with leaders in Rome or Washington, DC dictating to the consciences of the faithful—a better way to address the complexity of difficult pregnancy discernments would be to think of the Church as a community of support in the midst of and after difficult discernments; a community that seeks justice together and implements structural reforms while also providing spiritual care to those in need. What women deserve, is justice.

Book Description
Seven centuries separate us from the time of Catherine of Siena, the first lay-woman to be named a Doctor of the Church. Yet the twenty-first and the fourteenth centuries have much in common: a church racked by divisions and scandals...a world torn by war and violence and ravaged by disease. But now, as then, God stands ready to raise up women courageous and compassionate enough to speak the truth. Catherine's authority, like that of faithful women in every age, was rooted in her vocation, her wisdom, and her deep compassion. In Speaking with Authority, a revised and expanded version of her Madeleva Lecture, theologian Mary Catherine Hilkert presents Catherine of Siena as a challenge and inspiration for today's women-and men-to take up the struggle to speak the truth of the gospel in the church and in the world.
