Book Description
Excerpt from The Case for Vaccination This little book is intended mainly for the public, the idea of the author being to lay before them in as brief a form as possible the reasons which induce the medical profession to uphold the practice of vaccination. The writer makes no claim to originality - which, indeed, is out of place in such a book - but has simply collected the facts and placed them together in a convenient form. Book Description
Excerpt from Dr. C. G. G. Nittinger's Evils of Vaccination Why do even physicians resort to quack nostrums, or to such most ridiculous hallucinations as that of Hunter's inhalations of vitiated air in consumption? No science has yet been degraded by its own vaga ries so deeply as the Medical. Every science develops itself in three periods the first is that of blind faith; the second, that of smart sophistication and the third, that of sober in vestigation. The religious period of science, for instance, in regard to the treatment of small-pox in later times, was vaccination; the Sophistic period, re vaccination, scar theory, and a vaccine table system. Let us now solve the last problem; for as long as we renounce experience, which creates knowledge, we ban ish real science, (liebig, ) and favor the ascendancy of every trumpet humbug. Book Description
Excerpt from History and Pathology of Vaccination, Vol. 1 In this Preface I have thought it necessary to lay before the profession, the circumstances which have led to the production of these volumes. I had devoted myself for some time to pathological researches in connection with the communicable diseases of man and the lower animals, when the discovery of an outbreak of Cow Pox, in 1887, led me to investigate the history and pathology of this affection. At that time I accepted and taught the doctrines, in reference to this disease, which are commonly held by the profession, and are described in the text-books of medicine. In endeavouring to discover the origin of this outbreak, it was proved beyond question that the cows had not been infected by milkers suffering from Small Pox. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Vaccination For the last twenty-two years I have been engaged in the practice and teaching of vaccination. The six chapters contain the substance of the six lectures I periodically deliver to my pupils, together with the incorporation of several papers which I have from time to time published in the periodicals, and now for the first time publish in book-form. The whole of the work was written before the final report of the Royal Commission on Vaccination was issued, except a short paragraph on page 3 and the completion of the report of the first case given on page 60. I am not, therefore, indebted to this for any information, and it may be taken, so far as I am concerned, as entirely. Book Description
Excerpt from Smallpox and Vaccination Smallpox, perhaps more than any other disease, has inspired fear and terror in the popular mind because of its loathsome appearance, its extreme contagiousness and its disfiguring consequences. Lord Macauley's Description of Smallpox. - Lord Macauley, writing of the untimely death from smallpox in 1694 of the young and beautiful Queen Mary of England, gives us a powerful pen picture of the ravages of this pestilence: That disease, over which science has since achieved a succession of glorious and beneficient victories, was then the most terrible of all the ministers of death. The havoc of the plague has been far more rapid, but the plague has visited our shores only once or twice within living memory; and the smallpox was always present, filling the churchyards with corpses, tormenting with constant fears all whom it had nor yet stricken, leaving on those whose lives it spared the hideous traces of its power, turning the babe into a changeling at which the mother shuddered, and making the eyes and cheeks of the betrothed maiden objects of horror to the lover. Blindness from Smallpox. - During certain periods in England, a very large percentage of the people were pockmarked. Ben Jonson, the Elizabethan dramatist, wrote: Envious and foule disease, could there not be, One beautie in an age and free from thee. Not only did the disease destroy life, disfigure and maim, but it was at one time the most common cause of blindness. The early records of the London Asylum for the Indigent Blind showed that two thirds of the inmates had lost their sight as a result of smallpox. Smallpox Adages. - Smallpox was a great scourge before the introduction of vaccination. In London during the eighteenth century it caused one twelfth of all deaths. Book Description
Excerpt from Report on Vaccination: Read at the Annual Meeting of the Massachusetts Medical Society, June 1, 1808 Whilst we acknowledge that some, who had been vaccinated in the preceding years, took the fmallpox at this period, we have reason to congratulate ourselves that the number was so and that so few mistakes had been committed in a mode bf prat tice entirely new. Mr. Goldson himself allows, It was not ex traordinary such cases should occur in the early stages of its ia troduction.' Indeed, prior to the nature of the disease being sufficiently understood, ' he says, after Dr. Jenner, many prac titioners took up the lancet, without ever having seen the vaccine pustule. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fallacy of Vaccination The celebration, however, attracted but little attention; partly because those who credit the utility of the peculiar operation are indifferent to its early history, and partly because the modern notions respecting it are very widely different from those promulgated by Jenner himself. Besides, there is among profounder thinkers and observers a growing conviction that vaccination, so far from being a benefit to mankind, is itself utterly useless as a preventive, irrational and unscientific in theory, and actually the means of disseminating disease afresh where it is performed. Hence, while governments are stepping outside of their legitimate province to enforce the operation, the people who act from better information upon the subject, are steadily becoming adverse.
