Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Rebellion of 1837 Carlyle, in the introductory chapter to his relation of Cromwell's first civil war, wrote: "How has pacific England, the most solid pacific country in the world, got all into this armed attitude; and decided itself to argue henceforth by pike and bullet till it get some solution?" My object in writing the History of the Rebellion of 1837 in Canada has been to endeavour to solve the same problem in relation to that colony of the British Empire. How far I have succeeded I leave to each reader's individual judgment. I have sought to make fairness and impartiality my governing principles in describing the events of the time. The History is in some measure political, but is not, I trust, written in the spirit of a partisan: that I have tried to avoid. I submit the narrative to my readers in the hope that they will justify my pretension. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Personal Recollections of the Rebellion of 1837 in Canada The House of Assembly at Quebec had again and again refused to pass the Supplies. The speeches both inside and- outside of the House, and the inflammatory articles in the newspapers had excited the youth on both sides. The stormy petrels of revolution were on the wing, and a conflict of nationalities was in the air. The sons of the men who fought at Waterloo and at Trafalgar looked with scorn and contempt at the presumption of the spoiled child ren of French Canada and French nationality, who evinced a desire to dictate to the British. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mac's of '37: A Story of the Canadian Rebellion The Governor's wife had taken a strong fancy to the tall, fair-haired girl. Queenly In figure, supple and graceful, with grey-blue eyes, teeth like pearls, and arms that Juno might have envied, it would be a wonder if she had not. Marie' 5 principal charm, how ever, was the expression of her face. It was the kaleidoscope of her soul. The varied emotions of her mind, like sunshine and shadow, chased each other. In quick succes sion over her features, for notwithstanding her youthfulness, her few years had been full of thought. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Unusual Sources of Information in the Toronto Reference Library on the Canadian Rebellions of 1837-8 So I thought I would try to lead the student to more interesting sources of the fountain of knowledge, than at the dried up springs of the ordinary history. I then arranged to begin the bibliography. By doing the easiest part first. Which was to collect and make a list of all the histories of the rebellion. Then books dealing with the rebellion. Then the most important histories of ('anada which dealt with the subject to auv extent. This in itself presented quite a goodly list. Book Description
Excerpt from The Forging of the Pikes, a Romance of the Upper Canadian Rebellion The Forging of the Pikes is a romance based on old political struggles in Upper Canada over eighty years ago. In the first part of the story an attempt has been made to give the viewpoint of the Reformers - "the Rebels" - who precipitated The Rebellion in 1837; in the latter part the attempt has been equally honest to give that of their opponents, the "Tories" - or loyalists of the day. But when all has been said it will probably be the love-story of Alan and Barry that will attract the greater number of readers. In the construction of the story the author wishes to acknowledge with grateful thanks, not only the help given by a few "pioneers," who still remember early days in the bush, but also that obtained from the following books: "The Rebellion in Upper Canada," - Dent; "The Life of William Lyon Mackenzie," - Lindsey; "The Family Compact," - Wallace; "The Life of Sir John Beverley Robinson," Robinson; "Landmarks of Toronto," - Robertson; "Toronto of Old," - Dr. Scadding; and Mrs. Jameson's "Winter Studies and Summer Rambles," from which has been taken the little Indian song, "Ojibway Quaince."
