Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1911, Vol. 43 A small collection of Lepidoptera was made by the writer during the first five days of July last, at St. Fabien, Rimouski County, Que. Owing to the remoteness of the locality from the better collected districts, it was thought advisable to prepare for publication a list of the captures made. St. Fabien is situated at about one and a quarter miles from the St. Lawrence River, and is separated from the latter by a narrow wooded hill about 300 feet high. A beautiful sandy road branches off the main public road, passes at the foot of the hill and leads to the beach. This road for nearly its whole length is thickly bordered with alder, birch, coniferous trees, herbaceous plants and flowers of different kinds, and forms an ideal spot for insects, especially for butterflies. This place was visited several times during the above period; unfortunately, the temperature was not a'lways very suitable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1906, Vol. 38 Last year when in New York I was told that a move had been made, and that I would soon receive a circular about it, but on a subsequent visit this year I was told that owing to certain local jealousies the matter had been, at least temporarily, abandoned. It therefore appears to me opportune, as the original proposer of the scheme, to again bring it before our Society, and through it before the entomologists of the continent. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1878, Vol. 10 The empty pupa skins remain at the entrance of the tunnel. The moth itself at first is rather sluggish, and can be captured readily on the bark of the tree in which it has passed its immature state. The moth is very liable to grease, consequently it is advisable to let it thoroughly dry before capturing and pinning. The cavity of the abdomen should be smiled, and a few drops of benzole previously put in the cavity or placed upon the material used as stuffing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1876, Vol. 8 Last year, at our annual meeting, I took the opportunity of calling your attention to many fields Of Entomological labour that are now all but unexplored in this country. May I repeat that there is ample scope for the exertions Of all our members, whether they care only to form collections Of specimens, or prefer to devote their labours to the unfolding Of the life-histories or the study of the classification of insects? There is plenty of work remaining to be done even in the favourite orders of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, to say nothing of the others that are not so generally studied or collected. It would be a valuable contribution to our store of knowledge were lists of the Canadian species of all orders of insects to be formed, and presented to the Society for publication and at the same time a revision made of those published some years ago. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1922, Vol. 54 In the case of this species, the length of flight coupled with the fact that 'hoppers often leave succulent fields. Has an important bearing on control measures. It means that when the residents of some one territory have been delinquent in control measures, and those of some other territory have waged a successful campaign, the parties of the first instance may cause the reinfestation of the fields of the parties of the second instance and upset some of their good work. Also farmers in infested areas do not well understand the outcome of such an extensive migration and either grasp at the hope that all their 'hoppers will leave or believe that poisoning is useless. Thus a control campaign may be demoralized at just the time operations should be continued with intensity. Observations on Flight and Relation of Weather Conditions to Such. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, Vol. 7: January, 1876 As I mentioned at the outset, you have done me the great honour of electing me your President for five years in succession 3 while I thank you most cordially for your kindness and consideration so repeatedly shown to me, I feel that it is only reasonable that I should now make way for some one else, who may be able to devote more time and energy to the interests of our Society, and be of more real use to it than I have latterly been capable of. I beg, therefore, to resign into your hands the office that you have so long honoured me with 3 at the same time I desire to say that I shall continue always to have the welfare of the Society at heart, and that I shall ever be ready and willing to do all that lies in my power to advance its best interests. Again Offering you my respectful thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
