Book Description
Maria Fuentes, a beautiful med student from the economically depressed island of Cuba, is kidnapped and smuggled to Nassau aboard The Calypso Princess. Fearing for her life, and desperate to protect herself from being ravaged by her captors, Maria takes advantage of the protection offered by one of her guards. She has no way of knowing if the protection he offers is real or a ploy to have her for himself. She decides to follow her heart. Kyle Alexander is a teacher, a very good one. He has sought and been offered a summer job teaching English at a school for women in Nassau. When he accepts the job he is told his first assignment will be to board The Calypso Princess and help the crew go pick up cargo. He expects the cargo to be food, books or tools, but their shipment turns out to be kidnapped women. Kyle knows he is in over his head. What he has done will get him thrown in prison or, at the very least, he will lose the teaching license and career he has worked so hard to achieve. His first inclination at returning to port is to hightail it back to the safety of his quiet Oklahoma life. The rub to that solution is he has fallen in love with one of the captives. Now he can't get her out of his mind.

Can a normal American girl really catch a prince? When LA-born Calypso Kelly arrives at the exclusive all-girls British boarding school, St. Augustine's, she's determined to become popular. But when a photo of Calypso kissing England's heir to the throne, Prince Freddie, ends up in the tabloids, it will take quick thinking to save her reputation-and her relationship with the prince. After the tabloid disaster, Calypso hopes her next term at St. Augustine's will be better. But nothing could be further from the truth. Her archenemy (and culprit of the tabloid disaster) Honey O'Hare is her new dorm mate and her invite to the Annual Euro Royal Bash is nonexistent. Will a flirtation with a hot new sports star from the boys' school ruin her chances with Prince Freddie? Calypso has some work to do if she wants to go from pumpkin to princess in time for the ball.

Steinberg Henry has composed for us this magical island adventure into song. It is made up of 14 segments and 119 chapters integrating leaps in consciousness, methods and disciplines with skill surprising. Calypso Drift passes by way of an island Parliament, Dread/Rastafari, memorable black-sand beaches, religious systems, the KwÉyòl language business, high-school learning remembrances, a touch of Kalinago sensibility and, American song selections on Caribbean radio in the 70s and 80s. The text leaps to record seven years of Dominican Calypso lyrics, contributing in the process to archiving an island's history. Calypso Drift implores us to listen again to warnings of our song-poets. This is a book for lovers of Calypso globally, one for culture enthusiasts. Those embracing entertainment education, history and the arts in general should find its methods provocative. Students in the natural and social sciences can comfortably uncover themselves herein. And most of all, musicians, song-writers, composers and performers of Calypso find space in its consuming fire. Drift, globality is inside!

Book Description
In the 1990s, expressive culture in the Caribbean was becoming noticeably more feminine. At the annual Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago, thousands of female masqueraders dominated the street festival on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Women had become significant contributors to the performance of calypso and soca, as well as the musical development of the steel pan art form. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author in Trinidad and Tobago, What She Go Do demonstrates how the increased access and agency of women through folk and popular musical expressions has improved intergender relations and representation of gender in this nation. This is the first study to integrate all of the popular music expressions associated with Carnival—calypso, soca, and steelband music—within a single volume. The book includes interviews with popular musicians and detailed observation of musical performances, rehearsals, and recording sessions, as well as analysis of reception and use of popular music through informal exchanges with audiences. The popular music of the Caribbean contains elaborate forms of social commentary that allows singers to address various sociopolitical problems, including those that directly affect the lives of women. In general, the cultural environment of Trinidad and Tobago has made women more visible and audible than any previous time in its history. This book examines how these circumstances came to be and what it means for the future development of music in the region.
