Book Description
Excerpt from The Burns Country "I have no dearer aim," said Burns, "than to make leisurely pilgrimages through Caledonia; to sit on the fields of her battles; to wander on the romantic banks of her rivers; and to muse on the stately towers or venerable ruins, once the honoured abodes of her heroes." This volume is the result of such leisurely pilgrimages as Burns desired to make. I have wandered on the banks of the rivers and streams which owe much of their romance to him; I have visited his homes and haunts in Ayrshire and Nithsdale; and I have picked up, on the way, stories of himself and his friends, and facts and traditions concerning the people who lived and fought and suffered in his country. The land of Burns can also claim to be the land of Bruce and Wallace. It was the home of Lollards and Covenanters; it witnessed centuries of feudal strife; Gait and Boswell, Ainslie and Cunningham, Burns and Scott, are among those who have invested it with the charm of literary associations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Genius, and Character of Burns Burns is by far the greatest poet that ever sprung from the bosom of the people, and lived and died in an humble condition. Indeed, no country in the world but Scotland could have produced such a man; and he will be for ever regarded as these glorious representative of the genius of his country. He was born a poet, if ever man was, and to his native genius alone is owing the perpetuity of his fame. For he manifestly had never very deeply studied poetry as an art, nor reasoned much about its principles, nor looked abroad with the wide ken of intellect for objects and subjects on which to pour out his inspiration. The condition of the peasantry of Scotland, the happiest, perhaps, that providence ever allowed to the children of labor, was? not surveyed and speculated on by him as the field of poetry, but as the field of his own existence; and he chronicled the events that passed there, not merely as food for his imagination as a poet, but as food for his heart as a man. Hence, when inspired to compose poetry, poetry came gushing up from the well of his human affections, and he had nothing more to do, than to pour it. like streams irrigating a meadow, in many a cheerful tide over the drooping flowers and fading verdure of life. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 3: Genealogical and Historical Memoirs of the Poet His Associates and Those Celebrated in His Writings Robert burns came forth with a special mission to his country and to humanity, by illustrating the doctrine of the Divine Father hood, and the consequent brotherhood of man also by enforcing the duty of cherishing the virtues of sincerity, sympathy, and benevolence. Wherein in the exercise of his great function he struggled and fell short, and wherein he triumphed, it is our chief object in the present work to denote or signalize. Book Description
Excerpt from The Auld Ayrshire of Robert Burns The rude clay cottage of an obscure country clachan, was, thus, a most un likely place for the birth of a poet so world-famed as Burns; and it was un likely to the verge of incredibility that poetic achievements of such merit should be accomplished by one who was still a toiling peasant. Of course, with the im pediments which he shared in common with peasants in general, he possessed certain advantages in being a Scottish peasant; and he was also the son of an ex ceptionally intelligent father; but, making allowance for special favouring influences, there is in his triumph a certain unique ness that awakens in a peculiar manner both our sympathy and our wonder. How ever we may account for that triumph, it must be held to betoken an immense native endowment, a quite exceptional irrepressibility. Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of Robert Burns Several reviewers, who have done more than, justice to the editor's labours generally, appear to have misconceived his meaning in defend ing the complete reproduction of all the poems, and have discovered some inconsistency in his doing so, after the statement made in his preface, that none of those poems containing objectionable passages were included by the poet in the editions published under his own superintendence. The editor believed he did right in reprinting in full all the poems and songs which had already been given to the world, in a more or less fragmentary state, by previous editors. The original impropriety of printing many of them cannot be questioned; but as they have now become public property, they must find a place in every edition of the poet's works which pretends to completeness. It would have been an easy matter to have introduced several pieces of the same class, which were undoubtedly written by the poet, and which have never appeared in any edition of his works; but to have done this would only have been to repeat the offence against good taste and the memory of the poet which his friends committed when they printed all the mss. Which happened to be in their possession at the time of his death. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Robert Burns Lar not men of re ection think it a super uous labour to trace the rise and progress ofa character like Robert Burns. Born in the condition ofa peasant, he rose by the force ofhis own mind into distinction and in uence; and in his works he has exhibited what are so rarely found, the charms of original genius. With a deep knowledge of the human heart, his poetry exhibits high powers of imagination: it displays, and as it were embalms', the peculiar manners of his country; and it may be considered as a monument, not to his name only, but to the expiring genius of an ancient and once independent nation. Book Description
Excerpt from A Primer of Burns These pages are mainly intended to supply the reader of Burns with such facts concerning his life and works, as are most necessary for the understanding of his poetry. These facts have been chiefly derived from the editions by Chambers and Scott Douglas; the latter's arrangement of the poems has also been followed in tracing the development of the poet's work. The bibliography has been selected from various sources, and it is hoped that no work of importance has been omitted. Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of Robert Burns: With an Original Memoir The descriptive improprieties are but the momentary ex. Cesses of a healthy and vigorous nature, which, though prone to err, was seldom designedly gross or wicked. Besides, the censorious critics have too often forgotten his services on the side of purity. It ought to be remembered that he found the Scottish Muse a dirty, ribald bawd, and that he made her presentable everywhere. But for him the ancient lyric poetry of our country would at the present day have been all but dead and forgotten - he breathed through it the spirit of his own genius, and it is now as imperishable as the more immediate of his creations. Book Description
Excerpt from Sylvander and Clarinda: The Love Letters of Robert Burns and Agnes M'lehose We have made a somewhat radical departure from our previous current arrangement, in this volume; inasmuch as we have lifted The Poet's Correspondence with Clarinda and With George Thomson entirely out of the chronological sequence of his works, and treated them as distinct episodes, rounded and complete in themselves, - adding to these his Remarks on Scottish Ballads and Songs, his two Commonplace Books and the record of the Glenriddell MSS., now in the Atheaeum Library' Liverpool. The advantage of this arrangement will be manifest, because it simplifies the current stride in the record of his writings, poetry and prose, as carefully traced in the other five volumes, and enables us to give these two important episodes, of love-making with Clarinda, and song-making for Thomson, a rounded history and a perfect setting by themselves. We have, in order to make the Thomson correspondence more valuable and attractive, copied from his collection the music, which he published in his original work, of all the songs published, written or revised by Burns. In a work treated in chronological order, the difficulty of dealing with the Common-place Books which, of course, duplicate many of his earlier pieces, was a stumbling-block to our satisfaction, but, by placing them in kindred company with the Bard's Remarks On Scottish Ballads And Songs, in this volume of "Specialities." has relieved our difficulty, and, we believe, will give satisfaction to our readers.
