Book Description
The Bouzouki Building Bible . The first and only complete guide, in any language, to constructing your Greek bouzouki from scratch. This book covers every aspect of Greek bouzouki building, in great detail. It presents a unique approach to bouzouki building, in which the major parts are constructed, as much as possible, separately, so that any major problems can be easily corrected, or discarded and redone, without damage to the instrument as a whole. More traditional and alternate construction practices are, of course, also discussed. Section 1 is Preparation : basic design parameters, tools, safety, workspace, and detailed construction overview. Section 2 is Building the Body : design and wood selection, making the form, the staves, the sides, and the capping strip. Section 3 is Building the Neck : design and wood selection, building the neck blank, headstock construction, neck reinforcement, truss rod installation, headstock veneer, shaping the headstock, and drilling and slotting the headstock. Section 4 is Building the Soundboard : design and wood selection, gluing the soundboard, the rosette, the pickguard, and bracing. Section 5 is Building the Fretboard : fretboard design and wood selection, fretboard slotting and shaping the fretboard, and fretboard markers. Section 6 is Assembling the Major Parts of the Instrument : shaping the rim and preparing the inside of the body, kerfed linings, reinforcing and lining the body, label, attaching the top to the body, neck tenon and the neck block mortise, purfling and binding, gluing the fretboard and shaping the neck, gluing the neck to the body, and fret work. Section 7 is Finishing and Setup : sanding, pore filling, finishing, level sanding and buffing, bridge, final assembly and setup, and pickups. Appendices cover Names of Parts of the Bouzouki, and Dimensions of Parts. Includes drawings and plans for the form on which to build the body, and instrument. 288 pages, with over 230 color pictures and diagrams. In English. 8-1/2 x 11.

Book Description
Studies of mechanisms in the brain that allow complicated things to happen in a coordinated fashion have produced some of the most spectacular discoveries in neuroscience. This book provides eloquent support for the idea that spontaneous neuron activity, far from being mere noise, is actually the source of our cognitive abilities. It takes a fresh look at the coevolution of structure and function in the mammalian brain, illustrating how self-emerged oscillatory timing is the brain's fundamental organizer of neuronal information. The small-world-like connectivity of the cerebral cortex allows for global computation on multiple spatial and temporal scales. The perpetual interactions among the multiple network oscillators keep cortical systems in a highly sensitive "metastable" state and provide energy-efficient synchronizing mechanisms via weak links. In a sequence of "cycles," György Buzsáki guides the reader from the physics of oscillations through neuronal assembly organization to complex cognitive processing and memory storage. His clear, fluid writing-accessible to any reader with some scientific knowledge-is supplemented by extensive footnotes and references that make it just as gratifying and instructive a read for the specialist. The coherent view of a single author who has been at the forefront of research in this exciting field, this volume is essential reading for anyone interested in our rapidly evolving understanding of the brain.

Book Description
In this first biography of legendary banjoist J. D. Crowe, Marty Godbey charts the life and career of one of bluegrass's most important innovators. Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Crowe picked up the banjo when he was thirteen years old, inspired by a Flatt & Scruggs performance at the Kentucky Barn Dance. Godbey relates the long, distinguished career that followed, as Crowe performed and recorded both solo and as part of such varied ensembles as Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys, the all-acoustic Kentucky Mountain Boys, and the revolutionary New South, who created an adventurously eclectic brand of bluegrass by merging rock and country music influences with traditional forms. Over the decades, this highly influential group launched the careers of many other fresh talents such as Keith Whitley, Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, and Doyle Lawson. With a selective discography and drawing from more than twenty interviews with Crowe and dozens more with the players who know him best, Crowe on the Banjo: The Music Life of J. D. Crowe is the definitive music biography of a true bluegrass original.

Book Description
Las Vegas is known the world over as an oasis of entertainment in the Nevada desert, but to more than a million people of exceptionally varied origins, it is also home. Yet this city is rarely mentioned in studies of ethnicity or immigration, and the rich diversity of its population is largely invisible to Las Vegans and visitors alike. Such ignorance can be partly explained by the effects of the city's rapid growth. Las Vegas largely lacks traditional ethnic neighborhoods, and the restaurants and markets that cater to its diverse population groups are mostly hidden away in anonymous strip malls. Nonetheless, a remarkable variety of nationalities and ethnic groups has been drawn here since the city's beginnings in 1905, and today Las Vegas's vital service industry, entrepreneurial opportunities, reasonable cost of living, and appeal as a retirement center attract many more. Recent world events and international currents of immigration have only enhanced this diversity. In The Peoples of Las Vegas, seventeen scholars profile thirteen of the ethnic groups that make up their city's population. kaleidoscope of ethnicity that helps define Las Vegas today and analyzes the economic and social conditions that make Las Vegas so attractive to recent immigrants. The individual contributors--most of whom are members of the groups they write about, and who come from a broad array of disciplines--discuss the motivations and processes of their group's migration to Las Vegas, economic pursuits, institutions and other means of preserving and transmitting their culture, involvement with the broader community, ties with their homelands, and recent demographic trends affecting each group. This collection of essays provides a provocative look into the vibrant ethnic life that lies just beneath the glittering surface of one of America's most unusual cities.
